Prime Minister Anthony and Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton faced off in an election debate hosted by Sky News and The Daily Telegraph

00:03You just need your Medicare card, not your credit card,

00:07because Labor created Medicare, will strengthen Medicare.

00:11Prith, can I just ask, please, it's a great question,

00:14but can I just ask, what's your experience?

00:16So when you go to the doctor that you talk about with the gap fee,

00:19do you have to use just your Medicare card

00:21or do you have to use your credit card as well?

00:23I have to use both because bus billing doesn't cover the full charge,

00:27so I have to pay $70 or $80 extra.

00:29See, thank you very much and I appreciate it

00:31because yours is the story of literally hundreds of thousands,

00:36millions of Australians as well.

00:37And I've heard the Prime Minister run this stunt before

00:40with the only need your Medicare card.

00:42It's not true.

00:43And the truth is that public sector work conditions

00:48often then flow through to the private sector.

00:51And the truth is as well that every public servant isn't in Canberra,

00:57they're all around Australia,

00:58helping people in Centrelink offices around here.

01:01There is a lot of gas that's exported

01:03that we could turn back into the domestic market.

01:05We can reduce, as the independent analysis has shown,

01:09the cost of gas by about 15%,

01:11and that means we can bring down the cost of electricity.

01:14We can bring down the costs across the economy otherwise.

01:17And that is, I think, transformational for our economy,

01:20but, of course, opposed by the Prime Minister.

01:21Well, let's hear from him.

01:22Well, the only gas policy that the Coalition have

01:25is the gaslighting of the Australian public.

01:28He disagrees with all of the experts which are out there,

01:31whether it's the Australian energy market operator,

01:33everyone who looks at it.

01:35If the nuclear plan stacked up,

01:37the private sector would invest in it.

01:40But everyone who looks at it

01:41says it's the most expensive form of new energy.

01:45What we support is renewables backed by gas.

01:47A cut in the fuel excise, the fuel tax,

01:50it means a 25-cent-a-litre reduction,

01:53not just for families and small businesses,

01:55but also for pensioners

01:57and other people across the economy.

01:59And as you rightly point out,

02:00it takes some pressure off the supply chain.

02:03So it means that, you know,

02:04when you have a look at the fuel bill you're paying,

02:06think about the tradie as well

02:08who might have three or four utes running around

02:10and the cost each week being paid,

02:13or delivery truck drivers.

02:14Because farmers are on, you know,

02:17delivering produce to supermarkets, et cetera.

02:20That's where the real benefit is in the economy.

02:22The tax cuts that you have proposed,

02:24why are they for everyone

02:25and not just targeted for better cost of living

02:28towards those who need it more?

02:29We want to make sure that every Australian got a tax cut

02:33and the way that you make sure

02:34that low and middle income earners benefit

02:37is to target that first marginal tax rate

02:42that kicks in, of course, at $18,200

02:45and goes up to $45,000.
