00:00And in news overseas, Japan's Emperor Naruhito visited Iwo Jima and paid tribute to thousands

00:06of Japanese and Americans who died in one of World War II's bloodiest battles.

00:11The Japanese island, around 1250 kilometers south of Tokyo, was the scene of a five-week

00:17battle between wartime enemies, Japan and the United States, in 1945.

00:22Nearly all of Japan's 21,000 soldiers on the island were killed during the fight, while

00:27the U.S. side saw more than 6,800 fatalities and 19,000 wounded.

00:32Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, prayed at the three memorial sites, one for the Japanese

00:38soldiers, another for the islanders, and a third for both Japanese and Americans dead

00:42in the war.
