Central US braces for high-risk severe storms

AccuWeather Severe Weather Expert Guy Pearson shares where the highest risk for tornadoes this week will be.

00:00Breaking it down with me right now. I want to bring in severe weather expert Guy Pearson from our severe weather studio in Wichita, Kansas

00:07We've been talking about this threat since last week

00:10It became so apparent to us here that there would be severe weather here

00:14And I think it's really going to peak as we go through tomorrow guy now

00:18I set the stage for the warmth and humidity what we're going to look at next guy is

00:23The is the what we call the low-level jet the winds at around

00:285,000 feet and explain to our viewers why that is such a useful tool

00:36Yeah, good morning everybody

00:39Looking at the the winds at 5,000 feet. It's really how part of the dynamics from that

00:45You know the system coming out of the southwest and the bits and pieces

00:48It's how that dynamic how that energy itself then gets into helps with you know

00:54Transporting of not only the moisture as well as the temperatures, but then allows the winds

01:00You know through the column itself to actually have different wind speeds from what we're seeing at the surface up through and you know that wind

01:08Shear is one of those things which is that difference in wind speed as well as wind direction

01:13Then all helps to play into the different modes of severe weather and how much severe weather you do have

01:19I don't remember seeing the low-level jet. That is this strong over such a large area

01:24We're seeing up over 70 knots early tomorrow afternoon from Arkansas toward the Midwest

01:29And it just keeps going as we head tomorrow afternoon and even into tomorrow night

01:35Which tells us guy that we have a long duration severe weather event that begins as we head toward tomorrow

01:42All right future radar here

01:43I'm gonna stop this early afternoon and what I see guy are a bunch of little

01:49Thunderstorms the discrete cells explain to our viewers why those are the most

01:54concerning pertaining to tornadoes

01:59Yep certainly when you jump get to a tornadic environment

02:02It really likes to there are very specific ingredients and everything that tie into that to actually get it

02:08Formato or tornado to actually form and so if you have the air flow at the surface and everything that's

02:16Uninterrupted by other showers and thunderstorms around then it really provides the best environment

02:21So when we see these individual or discrete cells that we start to see either on radar

02:26Through some of the data output whatever the case might be it really suggests that you have

02:31individual cells that really then has all the environmental ingredients to work with to really

02:37Ramp up things and potentially go to

02:40Tornadic storms pretty pretty quickly and by tomorrow evening then it kind of

02:45congeals in the lines of

02:47Thunderstorms guy that are mostly damaging winds

02:50But you could still see individual cells within the line which tells us the tornado threat continues well past

02:57Sunset last night tomorrow night

03:00Sure, yeah, certainly, you know, it's one of those that you know, you start out with individual cells

03:05They do congeal. It does start to turn into more of a you know, widespread wind damaging wind event

03:12But you still will have because of the dynamics that we have in place and all the other ingredients

03:17You will still have you know little notches little hooks along some of those Boeing segments that will have the opportunity

03:24To develop tornadoes and certainly because we are in the overnight hours

03:28You won't be able to see them and certainly want to be paying attention to the weather going on in your area

03:33Through the evening and overnight hours a large threat from Traverse City, Michigan

03:39Down toward Austin, Texas the moderate risk Chicago Toledo toward the Little Rock or I should say

03:45Shreveport and then there's the high risk now a lot going on tomorrow

03:49But whenever you see this map, and we only have about

03:5125 seconds guy. Why are we worried about long-track tornadoes tomorrow?

03:58Yeah in here

03:59It's one of those as we're starting to see with some of the data and things like that is those

04:04Individual cells at the very beginning, you know, they're in a great environment

04:08There aren't a lot of other thunderstorms in there as well

04:11and so it can really feed off that environment and travel longer distances because of the

04:16Uninterrupted airflow into those tornadic cells. Yeah, the highest risk there

04:20You could see a large area where we think there's going to be dozens of tornadoes on the ground
