Now, we can talk via Zoom with the President and Coach of the Philippine Mind Sports Association, Coach AB Bonita.
00:08
Good morning, Coach!
00:09
Coach, good morning!
00:10
Good morning, Ms. Sheila and Paolo!
00:14
Yes, thank you so much again for... It's been a long time. Coach AB, how are you?
00:21
I'm good. I'm very active and looking forward to our activities.
00:29
Dev, of course. Coach AB, let's start the conversation.
00:33
Now, with the upcoming Summer Mind Enhancement and Memory Sports Workshop in May,
00:39
how do you plan to structure the program to help the participants to elevate their memory techniques
00:46
in preparation for the Philippine National Memory Sports Championship in August?
00:52
Now, we started talking to schools and our former athletes
00:59
so that we can start developing new players in memory sports
01:06
and at the same time, to improve the performance of our veteran players.
01:15
Considering the impressive performance at the Asian Championship last year,
01:20
where the team secured 26 medals including 14 golds,
01:24
how do you maintain that level of excellence and push for even better results
01:30
at the upcoming Indonesia Memory Championship in December?
01:36
So, what we do is we regularly talk to our memory athletes and we also train.
01:44
Plus, what's good about this is that most of our pro players or memory athletes have younger siblings.
01:52
So, their younger brothers or younger sisters, they look up to their older sister or brother.
01:59
So, now, when our champion graduates, for example, from the kids division,
02:06
he will go to the juniors division and the next one in our lineup of winners will be their younger siblings.
02:15
So, aside from our national training, their older brothers and sisters can also help them improve their skills.
02:23
Alright, Coach AB, for our teammates, what is a memory sport?
02:31
They might be surprised to know that we have an event like this.
02:36
Yes, right?
02:37
In memory sports, if the body has strength, the mind has weakness.
02:44
So, what our players do here is they are given several information like words, numbers,
02:56
shuffle deck of cards, face of a person, or binary numbers.
03:00
And our players will fight to see who has the most information and a limited time.
03:10
For example, within 5 minutes, there are 100 words that will be given.
03:15
How many can the players remember?
03:18
And they should have no errors because when there are errors, there is a deduction of points.
03:24
So, through this, the intense discipline in the minds of the players will be developed.
03:31
So, Coach AB, basically, all throughout, mainly memorization.
03:39
Yes, it's memorization.
03:42
And what's funny about memory sports is it's not just for kids.
03:46
We also have adults division and even senior citizens division.
03:52
I remember the first time we hosted the Asian Championship here in the Philippines in 2023.
03:59
Our eldest participant was 70 years old.
04:05
So, our brain can still be trained even though we are at the senior citizen level.
04:12
At the same time, the younger players, when they get good at sports,
04:18
even their educational performance is affected.
04:23
So, we were able to create grandmasters.
04:27
And our performers, our players who are champions in competitions,
04:34
in relation to their educational performance,
04:38
some of them become scholars,
04:40
or the entrance exams that they apply, they pass,
04:45
or some become dean's listers, even valedictorians or maniacum laude.
04:52
Very interesting, right?
04:54
Actually, what's funny here is the organization of Atty. Alagra, the Philippine Masters Games Association,
05:03
PMGA, Masters and Seniors.
05:05
So, they join sports even though they are seniors and masters.
05:09
This is also good because we saw Coach Eby.
05:12
She said that there are also seniors joining.
05:16
That's true.
05:17
Coach Eby, you talk about training.
05:19
But what are the strategies and skills that you develop or practice,
05:26
especially in your upcoming events this 2025, like Philippine Memory Sports?
05:33
The skills, number one here is our visualization skills.
05:39
Because most people are visual learners.
05:42
So, we remember the information faster when we see it.
05:47
So, number one, visualization skills.
05:50
Auditory skills are also included.
05:53
Sometimes, when we have conversations, we forget quickly if we don't list it.
05:59
So, in memory sports, we have one of the categories called spoken numbers.
06:06
The numbers can only be heard by people and can be remembered.
06:11
The same goes for remembering names and faces.
06:14
Whether you're a child or an adult, it's very important that we remember the names and faces of our conversations
06:23
or even clients when we're older.
06:26
So, those are just a few of the skills that can be enhanced when they train their memory.
06:33
Coach Eby, in this training or preparation for your competitions,
06:38
can you give us briefly, how do you train?
06:43
You said more on visual, more on auditory.
06:46
So, shouldn't it be noisy?
06:48
Should they be in one room?
06:50
How do you train for this?
06:52
The good thing about our training now is,
06:56
since the pandemic and after this,
07:00
before, our preparations were manual.
07:04
Now, we have digital competitions and digital training.
07:10
So, we use a website and training software
07:14
that contains the information that we need to practice and remember.
07:20
When the memorization time starts,
07:24
it's very important to be quiet in the surroundings
07:27
because any disturbance or noise can affect the focus of our players.
07:36
When it comes to competitions,
07:39
if it's still a bit far,
07:41
we train at least twice a week.
07:45
When the competition is almost daily,
07:48
we train our players.
07:51
Coach Eby, is this the same as what we did last time?
07:54
Coach Eby was my guest in Inside Sports, in Memory Sports.
07:58
So, he did an exercise for me, the visualization.
08:01
And I'm confident that I said it.
08:03
I'm perfect there, right, Coach?
08:06
Yes, yes.
08:07
Of course, there's no space.
08:08
Last time, Weshila tried random images.
08:11
So, he needs to remember different images within 5 minutes.
08:18
Maybe I can do it perfectly.
08:20
Of course.
08:21
I can do it perfectly.
08:22
Because you forced Coach Eby.
08:24
Coach, this is not forced, right?
08:28
No, no.
08:29
Even Weshila, when he tried from zero knowledge,
08:37
when he tried Memory Sports,
08:39
he was capable of remembering the information he was given.
08:45
Following the tips and training procedures.
08:50
But Coach, kidding aside,
08:51
Coach Eby, could you tell us more about the Grandmaster of Memory,
08:55
Chloe Andrea Galam-Gam's recognition in the PSE All-Women Awards 2025?
09:02
How big of an achievement is this for her and the whole team?
09:09
We're very happy and very proud of Grandmaster Chloe
09:13
because now her award has reached level 2 in the championship.
09:17
And she's one of the 14 gold medals that we won in the Asian Championship.
09:24
Half of it came from her.
09:26
She won 7 golds in the competition.
09:30
That's why when we were told that she will be named
09:34
as one of the major awardees of the All-Women Sports Award in PSE,
09:42
it was very uplifting for the spirit, not just for Chloe,
09:46
but for all the memory athletes who look up to her.
09:51
Especially when we were able to prove that Memory Sports
09:55
used to be a game for the majority of male players.
10:00
Now it can be played by female players.
10:04
Coach, you've been a memory athlete.
10:07
Now you're a coach.
10:08
How big of an impact has this had on you?
10:11
And how do you feel?
10:12
I mean, definitely, the Grandmaster won a lot of medals,
10:18
but it's also an achievement for you, right?
10:21
Yes.
10:23
I'm very happy because our community continues to grow.
10:30
And for me, personally, the effect of this
10:34
from me being a memory athlete before and now a coach,
10:38
is that my confidence level improved.
10:42
Because when I was younger, I was very shy.
10:47
I couldn't present myself.
10:50
And I was very forgetful before.
10:52
That's the main reason why I tried Memory Sports.
10:56
Because I wanted to improve my ability to remember information.
11:02
Now, as I said, our brain cells are overdosed.
11:07
Because even if you can see the information for a short time,
11:11
even if you can hear it for a short time,
11:13
we can still have the ability to remember it.
11:17
And Memory Sports training doesn't need a very long month
11:23
or many years to develop your skill.
11:28
Sometimes, just a few days,
11:30
with the techniques that they can learn from us,
11:34
a player can be capable to remember large quantities of information.
11:42
Coach, you have the Asian Championship of Singapore,
11:46
you have previous competitions,
11:48
where you won a lot of awards, especially gold medals.
11:52
Now, how do you plan to sustain your momentum?
11:56
How do you plan to build on this success?
11:58
And what else should you do to improve for your upcoming competitions?
12:05
Now, we started talking to our former Memory athletes
12:10
who are now coaching to continue to grow our community.
12:16
We are also talking to our colleagues in different provinces.
12:22
In the past, it was mostly Metro Manila players who competed.
12:27
Now, it has spread to Visayas and even to Mindanao region.
12:32
And of course, one of the things that we are preparing now
12:36
is for the opening of the Indonesia Open Memory Championship in December.
12:43
So, that is one of the events that our players are looking forward to.
12:49
Coach, last question.
12:50
If they want to watch you or have information
12:54
that they want to know if they can see you or go to your page or website.
12:59
And if you have any message, you can go ahead.
13:03
So, if you want to learn the Memory Sports
13:07
or to explore the Mind Sports of our memory,
13:12
you can look for The Brain Republic on Facebook
13:16
or the Philippine Mind Sports Association.
13:19
You can also write PTV Sports so that we know that you are watching us here.
13:25
And my last message would be, I'm encouraging people to try out the Memory Sports
13:32
and you will see the effect not only in the field of thought
13:38
but also in your daily life and in education.
13:42
Thank you so much, Coach Aby.
13:44
Coach Aby, you are an inspiration to a lot of athletes.
13:48
And again, congratulations to your achievements and good luck to your upcoming events.
13:54
Coach Aby Bonita, thank you so much.
13:59
Thank you so much, Coach Sheila and Paolo.
14:02
Thank you so much, Coach.
