00:00A state of emergency was declared in the eastern Ulumuk region in the Czech Republic due to

00:05toxic benzene contaminating a lake after a train derailment last month.

00:10On the 28th of February, a freight train crashed at the entrance of Hustopeca station, likely

00:15because of high speed.

00:16Most of the 17 carriages immediately caught fire after the accident.

00:21Some 350 tons of benzene leaked from the tankers carrying over 1,000 tons into the groundwater.

00:27The emergency order grants local authorities special powers to allocate resources and immediately

00:32initiate relief efforts.

00:35Work is already underway to extract benzene from the affected water bodies.

00:39Dozens of remediation pits between railroad tracks and the water are being dug and larsen

00:44walls are being installed to prevent further spread.

00:47Damages by the tanker fire are expected to exceed the 40 million euro mark.

00:52The emergency stay is set to remain in effect until the 27th of April to mitigate the crisis.
