Dr. Munjaal Kapadia says a lot of doctors are really scared right now, even as they battle on bravely against the second wave of Covid-19. He has an appeal for everyone—and some words of caution.

00:09There is no point downplaying it.

00:12Dear society, we need to talk.

00:16My name is Dr. Munjal Kapadia and I'm a practicing gynecologist at Nama Healthcare Mumbai and

00:22Amaban Hospital, Nafsari.

00:23Healthcare providers around the country are frustrated right now.

00:27It took us almost a year to get the pandemic under control, but for whatever reason, it's

00:32back to haunt us.

00:33The situation is incredibly serious right now.

00:36There is no point downplaying it.

00:37There is no point in damage protection.

00:40It's important to acknowledge this situation and work hard to now make sure that majority

00:45of the country is vaccinated.

00:47Only a fool wouldn't see the second wave coming.

00:49It has happened to all countries and even in December and January when the cases were

00:56at an all time low while driving to work, we could see people out on the road as though

01:00COVID is non-existent.

01:03We could see masks on the chin.

01:04We could see people walking around without masks, not maintaining social distancing.

01:09We saw people partying.

01:10We saw people traveling.

01:11We saw people indulging in high risk behavior.

01:14So it was expected.

01:17We just didn't know when it would come to knock on our doors and sadly enough now it's

01:22here.

01:23Right there nature are going to mutate.

01:26It is their means of survival.

01:30Even now, even with the double mutant virus, you will still have more mutants coming into

01:35the population in the future.

01:39We need to safeguard ourselves from it.

01:41The only way you can prevent a virus from mutating is to prevent it from getting a host.

01:47Mask wearing is essential.

01:50Getting vaccinated is essential.

01:53We need to break the cycle.

01:54We need to stop giving this virus an opportunity to mutate.

02:00My family got COVID last year, me, my wife and both my children.

02:06Fortunately both the children had very mild versions of the illness.

02:10My wife had loss of taste and smell.

02:12I had a slightly more serious version of the illness where I needed to take injectable

02:17medication.

02:18For anybody assuming that this disease is just like a flu and it's just five days of

02:27being at home and quarantining oneself, it's not true.

02:31I always believed that even if I did get the virus, it would be a mild version.

02:35Let me tell you that they were very scary two weeks for me and for my family.

02:42I was genuinely worried.

02:43I know healthcare workers have been more susceptible to this illness.

02:48You must always, always assume the worst when it comes to COVID.

02:52You cannot predict who will have a worse version of the disease.

02:55You cannot predict who will have a mild version of the disease.

02:58The only thing you can control is to prevent its transmission.

03:01Please, please, please wear a mask.

03:04Even around people you know, it is just not worth getting it.

03:08People are under a misconception that getting vaccinated and two weeks after that, you're

03:13free to not wear a mask or to roam around or to meet people.

03:16No.

03:18Even if you have documented antibodies, you can still get COVID.

03:21The only thing vaccination prevents in most of the cases is death and the chances of severe

03:28illness.

03:29You can still be a carrier of this virus and you can still transmit this virus to those

03:33who are very, very vulnerable.

03:35It's incredibly frustrating, professionally and personally.

03:38We were just about getting back to normal professionally.

03:43We were starting to do elective cases again.

03:46We were starting to see our patients routinely in the clinics.

03:49Everything has taken a beating.

03:51And right now there's no other choice because all the health care resources must go towards

03:55saving lives.

03:56Even on a personal front, it's incredibly difficult.

03:59Fortunately, health care providers have been vaccinated, most of them, but our families

04:04have not.

04:05All of them are still waiting to get vaccinated.

04:08So coming home is still a problem.

04:09Despite vaccination, we know that we can still be carriers for them.

04:12Personally, I can speak for myself.

04:14I don't want to get even a mild version of the illness and I don't want to pass it on

04:17to my kids or to my family members, many of whom are vulnerable.

04:21And I can say this with certainty that a lot of doctors are scared for the very same reasons.

04:27Please wear a mask.

04:28Please get vaccinated.

04:29Please don't fall for WhatsApp rumors, which tell you things like you cannot take it during

04:34your periods or that it will make you infertile.

04:36It does nothing of the sort.

04:38Please get vaccinated.
