00:00Abdul Rahman Thiani, the leader of Niger's junta, was officially sworn in as the country's

00:06president on Wednesday for a five-year transitional period following a new charter that supersedes

00:12the existing constitution.

00:15The duration of the transition period is set for 60 months from the date of its promulgation.

00:25This duration is flexible depending on the country's security situation, the burden of

00:30the reform and the agenda of the Confederation of the Sahel States.

00:37Thiani, a seasoned army officer, was also promoted to the rank of army general, solidifying

00:43his authority since he led the military coup that ousted the elected government in June

00:482023.

00:53According to Muhammad Rufai, the government's secretary-general, the five-year transition

00:58period commenced on Wednesday.

01:02This decision effectively dismissed effort by regional organizations to expedite a return

01:07to democratic governance after the coup in 2023.
