So when I see the Sea of Pink, I don't just see all those thousands and millions of people,
00:05
but also all of the people who were back at home, or had to work,
00:10
or just were not able to be there, but wanted to be a part of it.
00:30
The Pussyhat Project has two main missions. One is to create a great Sea of Pink so that
00:39
activists can be better seen and therefore better heard.
00:42
And the second one was to make sure that anyone, anywhere could participate.
00:54
These were things that we never sold. We just gave them just to support each other.
00:59
So you can walk down the street and someone recognizes it
01:02
and knows that you're a supporter of women's rights.
01:05
Pussyhat Project is a first step, or a step, in being politically active.
01:20
One of the things that we asked people who were making these is if they wanted to,
01:24
they could include a note about what women's rights issue is important to them.
01:29
And send it with their hat to the marcher.
01:38
I had seen some articles of like, what does it solve? What does marching solve?
01:42
And I think us coming together as a collective and renewing our excitement and commitment
01:52
to equality and having that kind of moment all together helps set the stage for the rest of the
01:59
year. Some woman came up to me the other day and said that her grandmother was really sick.
02:10
She was 92 and it was 2016. And she was devastated about the election.
02:15
She found out about this project and she took it on as her work.
02:23
I think it's really important to listen to women of color and their experiences.
02:32
I know that when I walk into a room, my experience is different by how people treat me in many,
02:39
many cases than it would be for women of color when she walks into a room.
02:42
And I think just even the basic acknowledgement of that is something that I think all of us
02:49
even just have to start from. All of our liberations are caught up in each other.
02:53
And it's really, really important to fight for all women.
