but for today, I have to tell myself that this is it.

This is who I am and what I look like.

Today, today I have to look in the mirror and say

not only that this is enough, but that this is beautiful.

Bullied because of my gender expression.

Because I didn't act the way someone assigned male at birth was supposed to act.

And so I was called sissy, I was called the F word,

I was chased home from school practically every day.

The only way that I was able to accept my womanhood

was when I finally moved to New York and actually met the first transgender women I would meet.

When I saw her on television, I understood that this is possible.

It is possible to be openly trans and to be an actor.

I thought how amazing would it be for this hip-hop mogul

to embrace this African American transgender woman on national television.

That felt like the kind of change I wanted to see.

So that's why I did it.

As I walked in the processional to this stage,

I couldn't help but think that four years ago,

I had not booked an acting job in almost a year.

And I was thinking about, this time it was May of 2012,

I was thinking about going back to graduate school

because maybe the acting thing was not going to work out for me.

It's a dream come true being on such a popular show

and the show has completely changed my life for the better.

I mean, I'm nominated tonight, which who would have thought, you know,

a black transgender woman from Mobile, Alabama

would be nominated for a Critics' Choice Award.

A lot's happened in the years since we last gathered here together.

Same-sex marriage has gone into effect in 10 more states.

so many people to understand that the issues of transgender women

is being introduced and in some cases becoming law

all around this country right now.

We are here to demand that our government

reunite migrant children with their families right now.

Our coming together today is a resistance.

We come with demands for justice, for equity.

We come today peaceably, but we also come to fight.

I love history and I love sort of looking back

so that we can have a better understanding of where we are now.

I think what my story demonstrates is that anything is possible.

I think that particularly in my country, in the United States,

there's not a template really for black transgender women

to be successful and to live out loud

and to enjoy this level of sort of acclaim.

So I think my story is one of the American dream in a lot of ways

and it's one of possibility.

And I think that if Laverne Cox can live her dreams,
