The Bee Network’s hidden but momentous change you might ‘not want to know about’

“It’s a momentous day for Greater Manchester,” according to Andy Burnham – but it’s all down to a ‘hidden’ change you might ‘not want to know about’.  Speaking on Monday (March 24), the mayor said a major change to the way Bee Network tickets work means Greater Mancunians ‘now have an integrated public transport system, the kind this city deserves’.  Unlike previous developments of the Bee Network, when yellow buses appeared in new parts of the city overnight, this update is ‘hidden’ in plain sight, as ‘tap-and-go’ ticketing was introduced to buses and  trams on Sunday.  “It went as well as we could have hoped,” Mr Burnham said in Exchange Square.

00:08We have now an integrated public transport system of the kind that this city deserves

00:15and it is already bringing huge benefits for our residents, making it easier to get around

00:22but also lowering the cost of public transport. I've travelled in this morning from where I live

00:27in Goulburn, £2 all the way into the city centre because obviously over to Lee and within the hour

00:34getting the V1 over to the city, that's pretty good value and then on into the city using the

00:43tram off peak means £5.40 for a whole day. You know if I did the same journey going back it's

00:50good value and that's what we wanted to achieve so I want to thank the team that's done it over

00:57the weekend. We've introduced a new system, it's complicated but it's been done without any

01:03hitches so far and you know we're really grateful to everybody who's worked on it so

01:09this is the end if you like of phase one of the B network. We have introduced

01:14an integrated system over bus and tram.
