00:00To remain competitive, the European Union needs skilled workers, an issue that the Commission

00:11and the European Parliament have taken up in recent days.

00:15This shortage of skilled labour is due to problems of supply and demand, and also a

00:20mismatch between workers' qualifications and employers' needs.

00:24There could be pressures because of the demand, and clearly for the ICT professions, given

00:29that they keep developing so rapidly, we don't really know what the demand will be in 5-10

00:36years, so how we can prepare for this specific knowledge, and clearly the education systems

00:42are not prepared for this.

00:44The challenge is enormous.

00:45Nearly 4 out of 5 SMEs are struggling to find qualified workers in the EU.

00:51The Commission has identified 42 occupation shortages, particularly in the construction,

00:57transport and health sectors.

00:59One, it is because of the demography.

01:02The EU is going to lose 1 million workers each year until 2050.

01:08That's a fact.

01:10Second, there is a rapid change in the kind of skills that will be needed because of robotisation,

01:17because of AI, because of what's happening in different sectors.

01:22The education system, but also companies, have a role to play.

01:28The skills system has no single owner, so we have the development of skills, where we

01:33have the formal education system, which is responsible of course, but we have activities

01:40of continuous education that relies the responsibility with individuals and with employers to be

01:46trained continuously.

01:50The new EU roadmap recommends investing in education and training, promoting professional

01:55retraining, encouraging student and worker mobility, and improving the EU's attractiveness

02:00to foreign workers.

02:03For example, the Commission wants to strengthen the Skills Pact to support upgrading and retraining

02:08workers.
