Hello and welcome to Manchester World, my name's Theo Houston-Betts and this video
00:03
is your transport update for Greater Manchester. So, let's dive straight in.
00:07
Firstly, a plan has been introduced to revamp Stockport train station amidst
00:11
concerns that it's fallen into disrepair. Suggested by Stockport Council, the aim
00:16
is to transform Stockport station into a modern facility with better concourses,
00:19
easier access to platforms and more convenient travel between the station
00:23
and town centre. Funding has been awarded by the government to put together a
00:26
business case for the future of the station, which is a good sign that
00:29
progress could be made fairly quickly. In recent years, Stockport has been at the
00:34
centre of one of the most impressive regeneration efforts witnessed anywhere
00:37
in Greater Manchester, with the new-look town centre bringing in tourists and new
00:41
businesses. But the train station is located fairly centrally and doesn't fit
00:45
in amongst the impressive renovations that have happened around there. With the
00:48
Metrolink set to reach Stockport soon, the town will soon become a vital part
00:52
of Greater Manchester's travel infrastructure and a new station will go
00:55
a long way to proving its credentials. Next up, plans for a T-bay-style service
00:59
station on the M56 have been given the go-ahead by a government minister in the
01:02
face of substantial opposition from councillors in Trafford. The services
01:06
will be located between Junction 7 and Junction 8 of the M56 and will include a
01:10
petrol station, farm shop and 100-bed hotel. While Matthew Pennycock, the
01:15
Housing and Planning Minister, has claimed that the need for a service
01:17
station in the area was indisputable, Green councillors and protesters have
01:21
argued that it will heavily detract from local businesses in Altrincham and Sale.
01:24
Finally, the new ticketing system for B network buses and trams is nearly here,
01:28
which will allow people the ability to tap a bank card on a tram or bus and be
01:32
charged the lowest fare at the end of the day. We'll do a deep dive into how
01:35
you need to change your travelling habits as soon as the changes have
01:38
kicked in, but it might be worth a quick check online if you're unsure. That's all
01:41
for this week, we hope it's helped and we'll see you again next week at
01:44
Manchester World.
