Rapper and actor Joey Bada$$ speaks on the rising popularity of his character “Unique,” the anticipation of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4, and more.

00:00And if you can answer this question too, man, when you first were brought on to the show,

00:06what was your vision for Unique and how did that vision turn out so far?

00:10My vision for him was exactly who he seemed to be.

00:15You know what I mean?

00:17My vision was that people would take a liking to him, right?

00:24Because he had this charisma, he had this charm, even though he was on the other side.

00:31And I think it played out well.

00:33And I think once I wore the character, it gave the writers some type of inspiration

00:40to take his character development in a certain way because they saw what I was able to do

00:49with him.

00:50Because originally, Unique was supposed to be an overcast.

00:53He was supposed to be played by somebody who was older.

00:57But when I went in for the audition, Sasha, he rolled the dice on me.

01:02He was like, yeah, nah, I like what this kid is doing with it.

01:06And with each episode that we shot, it just allowed me to kind of get more comfortable

01:12and comfortable to do things like trust my instincts, which is, for me, a strength, right?

01:20Because even the love bond between Unique and Rock, I don't think the writers initially

01:28had that in mind.

01:30But if you remember, or if you go back to season one, when Unique and Rock meet up in

01:37the park for the first time, and after their exchange, I literally did an ad-lib of a line.

01:45And I kind of flirted with her character.

01:48I told her something about, oh, you need to come to the shop, let me work on that jacket

01:52for you.

01:53And I think that was the first time that the writers saw, oh, snap, this could go somewhere.

02:01You know what I mean?

02:02So I definitely thank the whole production team for allowing me the freedom to be able

02:09to even do things like that.

02:11Because I was definitely able to contribute to the path that this character was on.
