In season 4 of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan,’ the show’s lead character is stepping out on his own and facing new challenges.

00:03It's, I'm glad that I'm able to bridge the gap

00:07between people that watch the show

00:10and know the character and know the arts

00:13and people that don't know the show,

00:14don't know this universe, don't know this culture,

00:18and, you know, bring them into that world.

00:23Now you want people to see you, Kanan.

00:25I want them to see me as me.

00:29Not who my mother is.

00:31I'm happy for you, man.

00:32Congratulations on a new season, man.

00:34Thank you, appreciate you.

00:36Now, Kanan has come a long way

00:38from the kid we all met in season one.

00:40This year, he's way more confident.

00:43How would you describe his mindset going into season four?

00:48His mindset's all over the place, man.

00:50I think, you know, you coming in from him grieving

00:53the death of his father in front of his face,

00:56not at his hands.

00:57I think you're watching him

01:00try to further establish who he is as an individual.

01:06Yeah, it's a lot going on for the kid this year, man.

01:09Like, he's gonna be thinking through and acting on a lot.

01:16He's gonna be feeling a lot.

01:18And, you know, that's the story here, man.

01:20You know, that's the story of the love

01:22of a mother and son.

01:24So one of the biggest shocks from season three

01:26is that Younique is still alive and he's back for revenge.

01:30How do you think that revelation

01:31is gonna shake up Kanan's world?

01:36I think that'll shake it up in a couple of different ways.

01:37I think there's the knowledge that, you know,

01:41his mother and Younique weren't, like,

01:45always the friendliest.

01:48I mean, I think there's a notion

01:50that he might be able to get in and, you know,

01:55mess with Rock the same way that Rock messes with Kanan.

01:58I think there's the notion that nobody really knows

02:02what Younique is on right now.

02:03I think there's the overshadowing thing,

02:07like, oh, this was his brother.

02:09You never, like, you don't know what he's out for right now.

02:12So, you know, Kanan is juggling and dealing with a lot.

02:17So this year, too, Kanan's gonna be working

02:19alongside people like Snaps, Pops, and Marchetti, too.

02:23But I wanted to ask you, as an actor,

02:25how was it like working along with legends

02:27like Wendell Pierce and Tony Danza, man?

02:32I can talk about them, but they're truthfully, like,

02:35oh, man, it's really just a blessing, you know what I mean?

02:39And for them to be so open and willing to share

02:43as people that have been doing this for so long

02:45and have such careers, I just sit back, shut up, and watch.

02:51I take in the process.

02:52I ask questions if they come up,

02:55if I'm curious about something.

02:56And again, they're beyond willing to share.

02:59So it's cool, you know, being able to be in that space

03:02and watch them do what they do in such a close proximity,

03:06after seeing it on screen and on stage for so long.

03:08But to be in the same room and call this person

03:11a scene partner, call this person a colleague,

03:14it's like, you know, yeah.

03:20Now, Raising Cain, and it's grown in viewership as well, too.

03:25For you that embodies such an iconic character,

03:29what has been the most rewarding part

03:30of bringing Cain and Stark to life?

03:33It's like you just said, that more and more people

03:36are gravitating towards the story.

03:39I'm glad that I'm able to bridge the gap

03:42between people that watch the show

03:45and know the character and know the arts

03:48and people that don't know the show,

03:49don't know this universe, don't know this culture,

03:53and, you know, bring them into that world,

03:56bring them into just a family drama.

03:59You know, this is literally just people

04:01dealing with one another and dealing with life

04:05and dealing with relationship and dealing with identity

04:07and dealing with, like, all these universal themes.

04:11So, you know, being handed that baton,

04:14being put in that position, man,

04:19I try to wear it with grace.

04:20I try to wear it proudly.

04:24So I wanted to know, too, man,

04:25with Cain going out on his own more this season,

04:29him and his mother's relationship

04:30is more strained than ever.

04:32Do you think there's more,

04:34there's still hope for them to build trust

04:36at all in the future?

04:37I mean, not with her killing his father in front of him.

04:42I think, I think with any familial relationship,

04:46I think with, especially with parents,

04:49I think with anybody that has a big heart,

04:51you'll always sort of have that same sort of, you know,

04:54want, yearn, longing for that relationship.

04:58But I think as things continuously happen,

05:02and you build your, not bias,

05:05but you build your perspective based off of that,

05:08that can also sway and change the want

05:13for that relationship to be what it is.

05:16You know what I mean?

05:17I think it's funny as mirroring as they are to each other,

05:22they do things that they say are for one another,

05:25but they're like hurting one another, not realizing it.

05:30It's a weird, it's a weird little, you know,

05:33song and dance between them, it's kind of funny.

05:37So what are you most excited for our audience to see

05:40for season four of Raising Cain?

05:44I'm just excited for them to see more of the stakes

05:48that we've put into it.

05:49I think, especially coming right off the heels of a strike,

05:56you know, I think you're seeing a lot

05:57of really raw, gritty emotion.

05:59Like, I think that's been something

06:01that's been really different with this show from the jump,

06:03being that we shot through a pandemic

06:05and then we shot through it, or not shot through,

06:07but after we came back from the strike

06:09and now we're back up on that,

06:10there's just a lot of personal experience

06:14that came to the work through and through.

06:17And I'm excited to share that.

06:20You know what I mean?
