00:00Jones and Keefe here on WEEI. Robert Spillane, one of two signings the Patriots have made from outside the organization.

00:07All right!

00:08Signs of life. Harold Landry last night, three years, 43 million. Robert Spillane, linebacker for the Raiders most recently,

00:15but he started his career with Mike Vrabel in Tennessee, three years, 37 million.

00:19So, they've spent a combined 80 million, you know, not even getting into guarantees,

00:24but a combined 80 million total so far on an edge player in Landry and an off-the-ball backer in Robert Spillane,

00:30who, as you said, Keefe, had 140-something tackles and 150-something tackles the last couple of years.

00:34Yeah, you know, it's kind of funny. One of these guys, maybe like Vrabel,

00:38where early in his career was a little bit of a grinder and then found kind of the right spot

00:42and went from a guy that barely played, maybe some special team stuff, I would assume,

00:46into becoming a leading tackler for the team in the last couple of years.

00:50So, Vrabel obviously still must like him from his time there that they had back in 2018,

00:55but it's not a position of need that gets brought up a lot, but I think it is one.

01:01They got carved up on the run last year. I know Juwan Bentley was hurt, so he was not a part of most of it,

01:06but Jelani Tavai became sort of public enemy number one by the end of the year

01:10because he was calling out fans and telling them not to boo and everything else and, like, know their role.

01:14So, if you're looking for some replacements there and if you're looking to get into, like,

01:18a more physical, hard-hitting defense, all right, this could help.

01:22Well, if you take away the big runs, Keith, they weren't that bad.

01:25If you take away all the 50-yard runs, they actually were average.

01:28But what I find interesting about this, they supposedly really wanted Sherwood,

01:32the linebacker from the Jets, right? That was a player that they, quote-unquote,

01:35coveted, according to the Herald, when they had their roundup a couple of weeks ago

01:38from Callahan and Kyde coming out of the combine. So, he feels like a pivot off of that.

01:42But, OK, they're adding to their front seven. That is a need.

01:45It's not shiny and sexy. No, no, no, no.

01:48It's not, you know, offense. Those aren't needs for this team.

01:51And that doesn't make them bad signings, right? Spillane and Landry could be good signings.

01:54But they are not headliners, is how I would put that.

01:57But maybe they help the defense and they help the middle of the roster. I'm not going to deny that.

02:00No, but hopefully this is like, and I'm not saying that it will be,

02:03but hopefully this is like Chapman and Buehler before you get Crochet and Bregman.

02:07Good point. Because if you just take the order out...

02:10If it is, we'll give them credit. Yeah, but right now, I don't feel great about that.

02:15Mike Silver, the Athletic, is linking both the Patriots and the Jets to Colton Davis, the cornerback,

02:19who is a top-20 free agent on Florio's list. So, that's a little more information there.

02:54and then just overpay the guy? I mean, I get that, again, he doesn't want to play here,

02:59but, I mean, if you throw an extra $20 million at him... I don't believe he didn't want to play here.

03:03And so, I don't believe Godwin didn't want to play here either.

03:06Godwin got, supposedly, $20 million more from another team, is what Rabsheet said.

03:10He left $20 million on the table. I don't think Godwin wanted to leave Tampa.

03:14And I think the Patriots might have gotten used in this, and maybe they wasted their time

03:17and chased their tails, but I don't buy that DK Metcalf didn't want to come here.

03:20No, that's right. Metcalf and Debo both were traitors, also out of their hands,

03:24so they might not want to at first, but then if you... Yeah, him going to Pittsburgh

03:27kind of throws everything out, whereas, like, Debo at least is going to a team that was just

03:30in the playoffs and all that stuff, but DK immediately sends a new deal with Pittsburgh,

03:34who doesn't even have a quarterback, and they play in the cold. That doesn't really add up.

03:37No, and if you were... Phil Perry said they didn't even make an offer,

03:40so they weren't in on him. The question is why? Probably the money,

03:45or the combination of money and a draft pick attachment. They don't want to pay both.
