Let’s break down how votes play out in the WA election

Chief Election Analysts Antony Green has the breakdown in how the votes played out in the WA Election.

00:00In 2021, the Labor Party in Western Australia had the biggest landslide in Australian political

00:07history.

00:08Well, they haven't been able to repeat it in 2025, but they've still had a spectacularly

00:12good result.

00:13If you look at the overall vote we're seeing at the end of the night, the Labor Party's

00:16on 43 per cent.

00:18The Liberals are only 27.5 per cent, the Nationals 4.5 per cent, the Greens are on 11 per cent

00:23and have done pretty good, pretty well.

00:25The change in vote, the Labor primary vote is well down, 16.8 per cent, but only six

00:30per cent of that has gone to the Liberal Party.

00:32The minor parties who did so badly at the last election at the Labor landslide, they've

00:36all recovered and so that appears to be where some of the Labor vote has gone and the two-party

00:41preferred swing out of those numbers is 10 per cent, which is an enormous swing, but

00:45still the Labor Party, 59.6 per cent, they're coming from 70 per cent at the last election.

00:51Now those are dramatic numbers and when you look at it in terms of the Chamber, at the

00:55end of the night, the Labor Party has 43 seats.

00:59Now they held 54 before the election, they've got 43 now, it's the second biggest win in

01:05Western Australian history after the last election.

01:08So Labor's had three landslide wins in a row, the Liberals are on five, the Nationals four,

01:13Liberals are likely to pick up an extra few seats so they will be the official opposition

01:18in the next Parliament.

01:19Libby Metham has been re-elected but she's got some competitors in the field now with

01:24Basil Semplus winning his seat of Churchill and so overall the Labor Party had a very

01:28comfortable win, nothing, no particularly good news for the Liberal Party, they would

01:34have wanted to do better and at the end of the night, Labor's back in power in Western

01:39Australia.
