STEM enrollment grows as task force enhances education, says Fadhlina

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Feb 24) that a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Education Task Force was in place to ensure enrollment in STEM fields continues growing.   She said recent data showed an increase in student enrollment in STEM fields from 40.95% in 2021 to 50.83% in 2024. 00:00In terms of STEM, there is a need to provide more students in the field of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering.

00:13In an effort to increase the participation of students in STEM, KPM has launched various initiatives,

00:18including encouraging inquiry-based learning, improving the skills of Malay professional teachers,

00:23professional training to strengthen STEM education through co-curriculum activities.

00:28The latest data shows an increase in enrollment of students in STEM from 40.95% in 2021 to 50.83% in 2024.

00:40The basic target is 60-40 in Science, Technology and Mathematics, which will continue to be strengthened with a more holistic strategy.

00:47The education reform agenda that is being promoted by KPM,

00:51one of which aims to strengthen the co-curriculum of STEM education through the STEM Education Task Force.

00:56This task force will strengthen STEM education and ensure that the country has sufficient professional workforce in this field,

01:04and ensure that teacher skills can be improved and strengthen STEM education through co-curriculum.

01:11We also provide far better STEM learning facilities through the implementation of 508 science subjects and 525 computer subjects,

01:20as well as strategic collaboration with various parties.

01:24We will also continue to support national foundations such as the Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation,

01:28and the New Industry Initiative to ensure that Malaysia becomes a high-tech country.
