00:00In this day and age, reading is important for the development of knowledge and the minds of children.
00:05That's why a group launched an initiative to encourage young people to embrace reading.
00:12That's the Magbasa Tayo Movement.
00:15That's why, Dianne, let's find out how they were able to help children in their studies,
00:21what are their projects and programs,
00:24and how we can be a part of this wonderful initiative
00:28together with the Youth Educator and their founder, Kevin Conrad Tancionco.
00:35Good morning, Conrad.
00:37Hi, Kevin. Good morning.
00:38Kevin or Conrad?
00:39Kevin.
00:40Okay, but Kevin, what is the objective and specific goal of the Magbasa Tayo Movement?
00:45Actually, because I am a graduate of the Library and Information Science,
00:49and I am a registered librarian,
00:51we saw the problems and shortcomings of libraries in the Philippines.
00:56This is one of the major reasons why we wanted to build more libraries in our country
01:04because this is lacking and needs more libraries.
01:10Okay, so you're building libraries.
01:12Yes, ma'am.
01:13Okay.
01:14So how did this happen, Kevin?
01:15How did this movement start?
01:17And what was your inspiration for this?
01:20Okay, so in 2015, we were part of a company
01:24that was trying to train young servant leaders of the Philippines
01:28and we needed to build what we call the Starfish Project.
01:32So this is where it started.
01:34Out of 81 students, I was the only librarian.
01:36So I said, I think we should and we need to make changes
01:41through our libraries that we need to build in our country.
01:44So far, how many libraries have we built and where are they?
01:48So far, we have already helped.
01:50One of the biggest is the 42 Barangay Reading Centers in Atimon and Quezon
01:55with the help of the Provincial Library of Quezon.
01:58We also have one in Romblon, in Isabela, in Baguio, and many more places.
02:04And hopefully, this year, we will be able to build three more Barangay Reading Centers.
02:09Wow, that's really fun in different places.
02:12Yes, aside from building libraries,
02:16what else are you doing to help the children?
02:19Aside from this, because we are short of libraries,
02:24now we are building and adding their books to the bookshelves.
02:29After this, we started the Reading at Home Program.
02:33We are rotating books to our Grade 1 children,
02:37to our learners, along with our teachers.
02:40So some of the schools are from Magdibang, Romblon.
02:44There is also another school that has just arrived.
02:48So, our program is about books and reading.
02:51Okay, what is the story of the children that you helped and helped to build, Kevin?
02:55One of the best feelings is to see the children holding the books.
03:00The joy and excitement is different.
03:02Because there are places in the Philippines where there is no internet yet,
03:06and the printed books are the only thing they are happy about.
03:10When it comes to reading, aside from the textbooks that we have in the school.
03:15Kevin, where did you get the books that you are distributing,
03:19and do you have partners or organizations?
03:22Now, because I am a librarian,
03:25we have librarians from all over the Philippines,
03:29and I bring them to the books,
03:31the books that they are removing from their books,
03:34we collect and give them,
03:37and we are sure that the children will use it better.
03:41Okay, for those who want to donate, collaborate with you,
03:44or maybe they just want to have a library in their place,
03:47how can they contact your social media pages?
03:49Okay, currently, we have a Magbasa Tayo movement that you can find on Facebook,
03:54Kendalai Baryan, for my personal Facebook account,
03:58to show you what activities and how you can donate.
04:02Now, we are planning to have 60 children's books
04:06for our Reading at Home program in April in Romblon.
04:11Okay, maybe there are people watching who have books that they want to donate.
04:18Do you have an office?
04:20Currently, because we are just a small movement,
04:25our home is where the books are placed.
04:29So, just reach out to our Facebook page
04:32so that we can have a discussion on how you can send the books to us.
04:36Okay.
04:37There you go, Dianne.
04:38KRSP Tunay, this is a very good start for Kevin's advocacy.
04:45And I hope that more people will be encouraged to do this project,
04:50and more people will be able to help your children.
04:53Welcome, Dianne. Thank you very much for joining us.
04:56Thank you very much.
