Western Australian voters cite cost of living crisis as a major concern in upcoming state election

In Western Australia, the news of the RBA cut has been welcomed by the Premier who says that it builds on the government's cost of living support. But the Liberals say Western Australians are still doing it tough and will be for some time.

00:00In Perth's mortgage belt, Tanya's balloon business was on its way up at the start of

00:08the pandemic, quickly growing from a home business into this retail space with three

00:12part-time staff and dreams of going further.

00:16And the changes that interest rate, the lack of the income coming in has kind of put a

00:21stay on that a little bit.

00:22The Reserve Bank's decision welcome, but Tanya's not expecting a rush of customers.

00:27Because they're not going to go, oh my gosh, I've got this extra money now, I can all of

00:31a sudden go and spend on balloons, for example.

00:35It's going to be like, oh wait, now I can catch up on my bills that I've maybe been

00:39behind on.

00:40The Premier happy with the news too.

00:42Inflation is now at its lowest rate in more than four years.

00:46So it's been a long haul and a hard fought battle, but WA has won.

00:50The rate cut is good news for Roger Cook with cost of living a key election issue, especially

00:55out here in the suburbs.

00:57The Liberals say it's not enough though, and there's more support the state government

01:01could be giving.

01:02We know that shopping basket is costing much more and more, and under the Cook Labor government

01:07we've also seen fees and charges up about $1,000.

01:11The Liberals in Forestfield pledging mandatory GPS tracking of repeat serious offenders released

01:16on bail and...

01:18Anyone who's being electronically monitored, who mucks around with that device, or commits

01:23another offence while being electronically monitored will go back immediately into detention.

01:31Labor was in Byford promising to raise the stamp duty exemption and discount thresholds

01:35for first home buyers, going further than last year's budget and making townhouses eligible.

01:41We expect over 22,000 West Australians will benefit from these new concessions.

01:46The Liberals have made a similar pledge which they say will help around 20,000 West Australians

01:51over four years.
