The WA state government is pitching its post-election budget as focused on building the future of the state. They say it's perfectly timed to respond to global economic uncertainty but the opposition says West Australians are being left behind.
00:00Boring budgets can be difficult to sell but that isn't stopping the Premier.
00:06Jobs are sexy, economic infrastructure is sexy.
00:09I can't believe we're using this language.
00:11The government trying to get hearts racing over local manufacturing.
00:15An election commitment in the works with money to start on Western Power manufacturing hubs in Forest Field and outside Funbury.
00:22This is actually about securing our own capability as a state.
00:26It's about securing the jobs of the future and making sure that our industry is competitive and the more we scale it up the more competitive it will be.
00:34Ambitions the government says are increasingly relevant.
00:38Now we've seen economic shocks in the past but this has been like something we've never experienced where you have changing major global economic policies every day.
00:49One of the government's biggest challenges is balancing those plans for the future against the need to help people doing it tough today.
00:56They've been pretty coy on what that help might look like and whether it will include another round of electricity credits.
01:03When they're boasting about this prosperity, families are still struggling.
01:08And for young people, you know, people in their 20s, people who want to get engaged and get married and have children, they're the ones that are really under pressure.
01:18We're always looking for opportunities about how we can continue to provide cost of living relief.
01:23And you'll see that in the budget tomorrow.
01:25The Greens want to see more money spent on speeding up climate action.
01:29Housing is also a priority but they say money alone won't fix the crisis.
01:33If they don't introduce regulations such as flexible rent caps, vacant property taxes,
01:39and making sure that the industries who are around this rental crisis are held to account,
01:44then we're going to keep seeing people go homeless.
01:47All will be revealed when the state budget is handed down tomorrow afternoon.
