Serbian students are marching over the course of several days to join the protest in the
00:06
central town of Krakow.
00:14
NATO allies are meeting today to understand the implications of the Trump administration's
00:18
announcement that the U.S. will no longer prioritize European and Ukrainian security.
00:26
Washington has said NATO membership for Ukraine is unrealistic, and that Ukrainian aspirations
00:32
of returning to pre-2014 borders were also unlikely.
00:37
The Lithuanian defense minister told Euronews that NATO is now at a very difficult moment,
00:42
given the slow nature of Europe's defense capabilities.
00:46
I think we are in the beginning of a very difficult process, where we will have to find
00:56
the specific ways to generate strength.
01:00
What is a good part of the message is that peace through strength was reiterated all
01:07
around the room.
01:08
What does that mean, though, if you've just weakened Ukraine's position?
01:11
As I said, I think we are in the beginning of a difficult conversation.
01:15
And one of the elements which is going to be critical, and as I understand also there
01:20
is an agreement in the room that it's necessary, is our own capabilities.
01:26
Because how can we sustainably help Ukraine if our own defense capabilities are being
01:33
developed slower than that of the aggressor?
01:37
The size of Ukrainian army and the size of our defense industry, of our own defense capabilities,
01:47
they are not matching the speed of Russian military industry, of Russian transition
01:56
from peacetime to wartime economy, of Russian assembly of troops at quite a threatening speed.
02:03
So therefore, yeah, I agree with that.
02:06
Maybe in the beginning of conversation we have to agree that strength is not on paper.
02:11
Strength is on the ground.
02:12
It's our troops.
02:13
It's our weapons.
02:14
It's our defense industry.
02:18
Both the European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Kaya Kalas and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr
02:25
Zelensky have called for European involvement in any potential peace negotiations between
02:31
Russia and Ukraine.
02:33
Any agreement without us will fail because you need Europe and Ukraine to also implement
02:39
the agreement.
02:40
So without us at the table, you know, you can agree on whatever, but it will just simply
02:48
fail because of the implementation is not there.
02:52
President Zelensky echoed Kalas' words, calling for a meeting with the U.S. and saying Ukraine
02:58
would not accept any peace talks with Russia that didn't include his country.
03:10
It comes after the U.S.-Trump administration indicated it's planning in-person talks with
03:37
Russia on ending the Ukraine war without involving them, after having insisted that
03:42
Kiev should not join NATO and stating that it's up to Europe to protect itself and Ukraine.
03:51
Behind me you can see the discarded flags and high visibility vests that some demonstrators
03:56
were carrying this morning in central Munich when a car drove into them from behind.
04:01
Twenty-eight people, including children, were injured.
04:04
Officials suspect a 24-year-old Afghan-born asylum seeker was arrested at the scene.
04:09
Police say that they believe he acted alone, but authorities have not yet ruled out that
04:13
this could have been an attack.
04:15
This of course comes a day before a whole host of world leaders are expected to descend
04:20
on the Bavarian city for a three-day security conference.
04:23
This includes U.S. Vice President G.D.
04:26
Vance, but also Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
04:30
But this also comes in the midst of an election cycle, with German voters set to go to the
04:35
polls on February 23rd.
04:37
Alice Weidel, the co-leader of the AFD-Far-Right party, which currently is second in the poll,
04:44
has tied the incidents to migration, calling for a turning point in the country's migration
04:49
policy.
04:51
This is Alice Taidi reporting from Munich for Euronews.
04:59
The United States is the largest non-EU market for Italian exports.
05:04
According to Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, during the first two years since taking
05:08
office, they have grown by over 15 billion euros.
05:11
But what could happen if made-in-Italy products were targeted by Trump's tariffs?
05:16
We put the question to Marco Simoni, who previously worked as an economic advisor to two Italian
05:21
prime ministers.
05:22
The impact on made-in-Italy would be very significant.
05:25
We export every year in the United States in the order of 70 billion.
05:30
That's a lot of money, a lot of different types of products.
05:33
So of course the tariffs would penalize it.
05:36
It would sell less in America.
05:38
And probably we would also buy less American things, because there would be tariffs, on
05:42
the contrary, also on American products.
05:45
Together with the furniture industry and food, wine experts would be among the main sectors
05:50
affected by Trump's tariffs, as the U.S. remains the largest importer of Italian wines.
05:55
We are inside the Pallini factory, the world's leading producer of traditional Italian limoncello,
06:01
a liqueur made from lemon infusion.
06:03
Out of the three million liters produced here every year, around 25 percent is shipped to
06:10
the United States.
06:12
Federvini, representing over 2,000 companies, mainly wine and spirits exporters, has called
06:17
for a de-escalation of tensions to avoid a full-scale trade war.
06:21
Michaela Pallini is both the president of the Pallini family-run business founded 150
06:26
years ago in Rome and the president of Federvini.
06:29
The United States is our main export sector for Italian wines and spirits.
06:37
We are talking about about 30 percent of the 2 billion exports, so the account is almost
06:46
done.
06:47
And of these, so this large volume, we could lose almost half of it.
06:53
In short, this is a concrete risk.
06:56
Despite her close ties with Trump, it would be difficult for Giorgia Meloni to be offered
07:00
any shortcuts.
07:02
It is good that Italy has this privileged relationship, but this relationship will not
07:07
have an influence on any debts.
07:09
Because the debts that are less paid will be paid to the European Union, not to individual
07:13
countries.
07:14
We are members of the European Union and we negotiate any trade position as the European
07:19
Union, not as a single state.
07:21
Giorgia Meloni for Euronews in Rome.
07:24
Serbian students from several cities are marching over the course of four days to join at a
07:35
15th of February protest in the central town of Kragujevac.
07:40
The demonstrations, led by university students, demand accountability and justice for the
07:46
deaths of 15 people in the train station awning collapse last November.
07:51
One student tells us why he is marching.
08:01
Weeks-long protests forced the resignation of Serbia's Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic,
08:07
and further concessions from authorities.
08:09
However, students do not believe their demands have been fully met.
08:13
In January, students went on an 80-kilometer march from Belgrade to the northern city of
08:19
Novi Sad.
08:21
Hamas announced on Thursday it will go through with its release of three more hostages on
08:35
Saturday as planned.
08:37
The militant group had earlier said it would delay the next release after accusing Israel
08:42
of failing to meet its end of obligations to the ceasefire deal.
08:47
In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to restart the war, saying
08:52
all hell will break loose if Hamas stops releasing hostages.
08:56
Following discussions with mediators from Egypt and Qatar, both parties assured their
09:01
commitment to all aspects of the ceasefire agreement.
09:04
The discussion focused on the necessity of implementing all provisions of the agreement,
09:11
especially with regard to securing housing for Gazans.
09:15
This includes the urgent entry of prefabricated houses, tents, heavy equipment, medical supplies,
09:21
fuel, and the continued flow of relief.
09:26
Israeli government spokesperson David Mentzer said on Thursday that if Hamas does not release
09:31
the three hostages on Saturday, the ceasefire will end.
09:45
Villipendiado by some, defended by others, misunderstood by many, the so-called Mercosur
09:50
agreement generates these days great passions in the farms of the entire European Union,
09:54
especially here in France.
09:56
The European Commission has just signed it, to the great dismay of almost all French
10:01
farmers who openly oppose an ambitious and complex agreement that has been in negotiations
10:08
for 25 years.
10:10
The Common Market of the South, Mercosur and the European Union have agreed to trade goods
10:17
with orange trees, or without them.
10:20
If ratified, it would create a market of about 800 million people, one of the largest free
10:25
trade areas in the world.
10:27
It would eliminate more than 90% of orange trees between Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay
10:32
and the 27 community countries.
10:35
It would imply fewer taxes on cars, industrial equipment and European chemical products,
10:41
as well as clothing, pharmaceutical products and some agri-foods.
10:46
Instead, the EU would open its markets more to Mercosur, in particular to its agri-foods.
10:53
Free sugar and corral bees taxes would increase.
10:57
Mercosur could also export 99,000 additional tons of vaccine to Europe with reduced oranges.
11:04
1.6% of its annual production in Europe.
11:09
Germany and Spain support the agreement.
11:12
Italy has sent contradictory signals.
11:15
Poland, and in particular France, are against it.
11:18
Its farmers say that Mercosur producers will not be subject to European labor laws and
11:23
costs, nor to their strict regulation of pesticides, or hormones and antibiotics in animals.
11:30
They also denounce that the agreement undermines consumers and threatens the sustainability
11:35
of European Union farms.
