Thousands of worshippers, particularly from the Hokkien community, gathered at the Jade Emperor’s Pavilion in Air Itam, Penang on Wednesday (Feb 5) for the grand celebration of the Jade Emperor’s birthday, known as Pai Thnee Kong.

00:16Devotees ascended the 110 granite steps leading to the temple, carrying an array of offerings
00:22as they observed the religious tradition that has been passed down for generations.
00:27The uphill journey to the temple is a significant act of devotion, with worshippers seeking
00:32blessings from the Jade Emperor and other deities enshrined within the temple.
00:37To express their gratitude, devotees offered prayers, joss sticks, and a variety of traditional
00:43offerings including sugar cane stalks, which symbolize their ancestors' survival and prosperity.
00:49The Jade Emperor's birthday celebrations commenced on the night of the eighth day of the Chinese
00:54New Year, with the following day regarded as his official birthday.
00:59For the Hokkien community, this day is also celebrated as their New Year, and they would
01:04offer thanks to the Jade Emperor who was believed to have rescued the ancestors of the Hokkiens
01:10from the clutches of an invading army.
