Daniel Khalife sentenced after prison escape

Daniel Khalife has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of spying for Iran.

00:0014 years and 3 months is the sentence for former soldier Daniel Khalif. For count 1,

00:07which was of course breaching the Official Secrets Act, he received 6 years. Count 2,

00:14which was breaching the Terrorism Act, another 6 years. And not forgetting count 4, which

00:20was escaping from Wandsworth prison in September of 2023. That is 2 years and 3 months. Considering

00:29the sentences are consecutive, that brings us to that total figure of just over 14 years.

00:37We've heard that 23-year-old Khalif showed no reaction as he was sentenced. The judge,

00:44Mrs Justice Cheema Groob, said he had been motivated by a selfish desire to show off

00:51and described him as a dangerous fool during the sentencing. She also said that the level

00:58of harm caused by Khalif was moderate to high. Obviously not the bare minimum, but

01:04not the most severe. She emphasised that the details shared with the Iranians by Khalif

01:11were of undoubtable value. She also discussed the cost of his escape, highlighting the man

01:18hours and the financial burning of the manhunt, which of course ultimately successfully found

01:24him on a canal towpath. Khalif, who was originally from Kingston in South West London, was serving

01:32in the British Army when he exposed military personnel to serious harm by collecting sensitive

01:38information and passing it to agents of the Middle Eastern country.
