This is $106 million over four years and the money will go towards prevention and support
00:08
programs.
00:09
One of which is basically rolling out an existing program in New South Wales nationally.
00:14
So Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announcing this strategy said the way that that would
00:19
work is for parents who were concerned about their child being radicalised or showing sort
00:25
of tendencies towards violent extremism, they could contact this support service and
00:31
get help.
00:32
Because he says that parents are sort of hesitant I suppose to contact police if their child
00:38
hasn't yet committed a crime but they're showing some of those behaviours.
00:41
So he says this is a way that they can get that support if needed.
00:45
Now the Federal Government is also releasing a fact sheet that will provide advice to parents
00:51
to be able to identify some of those behaviours and also be able to talk to their children
00:57
about it.
00:58
Tony Burke the Home Affairs Minister says that more people are becoming radicalised
01:03
to violence and particularly young people are vulnerable.
01:07
As the Director General of ASIO Mike Burgess has made clear, increasingly we are also finding
01:13
people who are younger.
01:15
We are increasingly finding people who are radicalised faster and radicalised online.
01:20
We are increasingly finding people where it's no longer a set ideology, be it what
01:26
would be viewed as an extremist ideology purporting to be based on faith or what would be described
01:36
as a right wing racist ideology.
01:41
It's now as well mixed ideologies as part of these rapid forms of radicalisation.
01:48
Minister Burke was also talking about the recent change a few months ago in the terror
01:52
threat level going from possible to probable and he said that as that threat level evolves
01:59
so too should the government's response.
02:01
So that is the reason behind today's announcement.
