Wet and windy with damaging surf for the NSW coast

Heavy storm activity continues across much of the east.

00:00Wet and windy weather is developing about the east coast of NSW, with heavy rainfall,

00:05damaging winds and dangerous surf.

00:08So let's take a look at the areas that are expected to be impacted and where our warnings

00:12are current.

00:14We have a severe weather warning that extends from the mid north coast through the Hunter

00:18into the Sydney metropolitan.

00:20Now this is for locally strong to damaging winds, averaging 60km but gusting in excess

00:26of 90, and that's what we've seen this morning.

00:29Those winds are expected to ease later this evening.

00:33Now the heavy rainfall will be concentrated about the north Hunter and also the mid north

00:38coast, with 6 hourly rainfall totals of 70-120mm, especially about the Escarpment.

00:46Now the heavy rainfall is expected to continue overnight tonight and into Saturday.

00:52Now because of that reason we do have a number of flood watches throughout the central, Hunter

00:57and mid north coast, and that is for possible minor flooding from this afternoon and continuing

01:02into tomorrow.

01:04We also have a coastal hazards warning for damaging surf extending from the mid north

01:09coast all the way down to the Illawarra, for very heavy surf that's likely to cause coastal

01:15erosion, particularly about the exposed coasts.

01:19A hazardous surf warning is also in place, extending from the Macquarie coast all the

01:23way down to the Batemans coast, and this is for more damaging surf, which is forecast

01:28to move into northern parts of NSW tomorrow.

01:32So let's take a look at how this weather system has evolved.

01:37We have this low pressure system that's sitting off the north coast, and that's bringing a

01:41really moist onshore flow and a lot of showers right along the NSW coast, with the majority

01:47of the heavier falls about that northern half.

01:51As we move into Saturday afternoon, that low pressure system starts to skirt away, dragging

01:57with it, eventually, that heavier rainfall.
