Midwest braces for arctic blast this weekend

High temperatures on Monday, Jan. 20, will be more than 30 degrees lower than they were on Friday, plunging a huge swath of the U.S. into RealFeel temperatures of below zero.

00:00Welcome back to AccuWeather Ahead and get ready for a temperature rollercoaster just

00:06bottoming out here as we head throughout the weekend.

00:09Here's a look at the difference between the highs on Friday and the highs we're forecasting

00:12for Monday across the Midwest, the Central Plains, and parts of the Northern Plains.

00:17Yes, take a look at this.

00:18On Friday, hey, everything's going to be for the most part above normal here as far as

00:22afternoon highs.

00:23However, as we head throughout the weekend, a shot of Arctic air is going to sweep its

00:27way across the region, and then look at what happens to the highs.

00:30These are the high temperatures, not the lows, the high temperatures as we head into Monday.

00:35So for St. Louis, a 34 degree temperature drop here between Friday and Monday.

00:41And then look at Minneapolis going from 37 to negative 8.

00:44That is a 45 degree temperature drop.

00:46So dangerous cold moving into the forecast here as we head throughout Sunday and as we

00:51head into Monday.

00:52So what are we talking about as far as the cold?

00:54Well, as we head into tonight, look at Fargo overnight low forecast of 28.

00:58Still cold, but look what happens here after this cold front sweeps through.

01:01We're going to go from 28 tonight to negative or to 16 degrees below zero there Saturday

01:08morning.

01:09So that is a huge temperature drop.

01:10That's a 44 degree temperature drop for low temperatures and just 48 hours.

01:15So very powerful Arctic front is continuing to make its way across the Northern Plains.

01:20So whenever you take in all the factors, this is our AccuWeather real field scale and

01:24you can see that AccuWeather real field temperatures in parts of the Northern Plains will be as

01:29low as 40 degrees below zero.

01:33Dangerous cold in the forecast here as we head throughout Saturday.

01:36And then for Saturday afternoon, not only talking about the lows being a big change,

01:40but on Saturday afternoon, we're going to see highs across this region.

01:43The 24 hour difference will be as cold as 40 degrees colder on Saturday than Friday

01:48afternoon.
