Lake-effect snow heading out just before arctic blast and more rounds of winter weather

Areas around the Great Lakes will have another burst of snow just before an extreme cold wave hits much of the eastern half of the U.S.

00:00Even just over the past 24 hours or so, we've seen some pretty impressive numbers over a foot.

00:05All of these areas listed in New York really concentrated across the interior right downwind

00:12of Lake Erie. But where we are anticipating some of those higher impacts, we're still piling them

00:19up. So we're closely monitoring these numbers. But if you look at an area like Holland,

00:24New York, you're upwards to 17 inches over that. And Point Rock, you're at 16 inches.

00:29Silver Creek, not too far behind. You'll watch that snow on the map here just continue to meander.

00:37It doesn't want to necessarily leave like right away, but it will, especially as we are tracking

00:43this next weather maker, though, as we head into tomorrow. So this what's left, the lake effect

00:50snow, going to be kind of pushed out or absorbed from this next system that's going to be moving in

00:55across the north and west. But this is going to pick it up and along with it, dump some more snow

01:02on top of what's already fallen here in the northeast. Let's look at an area like Erie,

01:08PA, for a minute. We're talking about about 10 to 15 inches of snow. That snow expected to go

01:14at least through early Friday. That's our highest probability. But in an area like Erie, we're also

01:20encompassing when we get rid of this next system. So we're kind of tacking on what we're going to

01:27be seeing as this next weather maker rolls on through. It's a quick hitter, though, so it

01:31doesn't have a lot of time to dump a lot of snow. But we're talking probably an additional

01:37three to six on top of areas I've already seen possibly close to and more we've already seen

01:44more than a foot of snow. Let's take you live to Chicago, Illinois. It's time for the big three,

01:49where we look at the other big weather stories we are following for today. Yeah, 16 degrees. We've

01:54been pretty cold here. Bree, it's been a cold January, but there's a step in the right direction.

02:00But that was a good but. It was a good but. Yes. All right. It's set a lot. I know. However,

02:08it's going to get colder again. And the cold, cold is going to set in next week. Yeah, it's

02:13Siberian cold. We're deep in the trenches here when it comes to that cold settling across a lot

02:22of the U.S. This goes Friday into Monday, and we're calling this the Polar Express. It truly is.

02:28Absolutely. And it'll be sticking around through the week following that into Chicago and heading

02:33into the other side of the plains. We've got some snow on the map. We do. Even extending Friday night

02:38into Saturday evening. That extends from the Northern Rockies down through the Front Range,

02:45Denver included. We are anticipating about four to eight inches there in Denver, but it's going

02:50to be quite cold as this storm and as the cold continues to settle over this area. Yeah, so don't

02:59get too comfortable with any warm up the next day or two. We have showers near the Gulf Coast,

03:04and some of this is pulling away from Victoria and Corpus Christi. But Houston,

03:08you've seen some rain out there today. Yeah, some steadier showers, but, you know, it has been

03:15quite gray, at least when we haven't had the rain, but slowly, but surely creeping east.

03:22And it's moving into New Orleans there, where the American Meteorological Society has been doing

03:26their thing, the big AMS conference, over the past week. Over the past week, high pressure

03:32in charge, though, that starts to move in from the West, and it's dry, at least for the start

03:39of the weekend. You can see just a hint of what we get into then. Friday, 63 in Oklahoma City.

03:44Saturday, 34. So get ready for it. The big drop is going to be setting in. All right, let's get

03:49ready for it. It's going to take a lot here, Jeff. I know we've been hit hard. It's been a long year

03:56already with the winter weather. Just storm potential, though, on top. This goes January

04:0118th through the 20th. Yeah, so the weekend, first wave kicks through with rain for I-95,

04:07and then some snow in the interior. A second wave will follow as cold air really charges south.

04:12Yeah, and that risk of sub-freezing temperatures high again. I know it wasn't that long ago that

04:19we were talking about the same risk. It is going to be quite cold, and that's early next week. That

04:24sets the stage for that winter storm threat. We're tracking significant snow or ice across some of

04:31the same areas that were just hit. And this could even break out near Houston and parts of the I-10

04:37corridor. The southern part of this is reaching even further south. Yeah, big deal there. We don't

04:43do well with snow or ice in some of these areas.
