NATO launches Baltic Sea patrols after suspected cable sabotage

00:00Faced with suspected Russian sabotage, they're taking action.

00:05After several hours of discussions, the leaders of NATO countries said they'd be strengthening

00:10the alliance's presence in the Baltic Sea.

00:12It will involve a range of assets, including frigates and maritime patrol aircraft, among

00:18others, and will enhance our vigilance in the Baltic.

00:22A small fleet of naval surface drones will also be deployed.

00:26The aim is to improve surveillance and deterrence amid a string of incidents in the Baltic Sea,

00:32in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines have been damaged in the wake of

00:36Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

00:39European leaders and experts alike suspect Moscow have been behind these acts, known

00:44as hybrid warfare.

00:46Hybrid means sabotage, hybrid means cyber attacks, hybrid means sometimes even assassination

00:53attempts, and in this case it means hitting on our critical undersea infrastructure, that

00:59the alliance will not accept that, and that we will do everything in our power to make

01:05sure that we fight back.

01:08NATO has already provided two ships to monitor undersea infrastructure, as well as Russia's

01:13Shadow Fleet, ships sailing under foreign flags, which Moscow is accused of using to

01:18export oil to get around Western sanctions.

01:22The new mission will continue indefinitely.

01:25As the President of Finland Alexander Stubb put it, get used to the new normal.
