00:00And in Dallas, Joe, it really came down to today.

00:04It's when Mike McCarthy's current contract expires and he would be a free agent.

00:11We knew that was going to be the case, but it seemed as though in the last week after

00:15the Cowboys denied the Bears permission to interview Mike McCarthy and we had some further

00:21reports that maybe, just maybe, the Dallas locker room and Jerry Jones was starting to

00:26believe that Mike McCarthy would be there for 2025 and beyond, and a new deal might

00:31be reached.

00:33Nope, not the case yesterday.

00:35The two sides agreeing to part ways is how they are putting it.

00:41NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reporting that the two sides could not agree on a contract

00:47length of this new deal.

00:49Regardless, for Mike McCarthy, he is now a coaching free agent and the Cowboys now need

00:55a new head man.

00:57Joe, what did you make of this process, and maybe better yet, the timeline that led to

01:02the decision ultimately in Dallas that Mike McCarthy would not return as the head coach

01:07for next season?

01:10It's a dumpster fire.

01:12I just don't know how else to put it where everybody before this season, the minute that

01:19McCarthy did not have an extension, they didn't work out a new contract, he was basically

01:25a lame duck coach, and everyone thought, yeah, it's just a matter of time before he's

01:29fired here.

01:30But the other problem is that they set him up to fail.

01:34I mean, they spent an NFL, oh, 20 million in free agency, just 20 million since the

01:41end of last year.

01:42So they didn't invest in the roster outside of the draft.

01:46They didn't invest in Mike McCarthy as the head coach because they let him hang around

01:51all season long, Ben, wondering if they, and the players wondering, is this guy even

01:56still going to be here?

01:58You basically set him up to fail and how it took you that long to figure out that he wasn't

02:04the guy or that you wanted to move on, it just, it screams that there is something going

02:10on in the hierarchy here at Dallas that is not right here.

02:15And until, if you're not going to invest from the top down, starting with the head coach

02:20and giving him some say and some power, I don't know what they, who in their right mind

02:25wants to take this job right now here, Ben.
