Do you know that there is a type of brain damage that can result in a condition that affects our ability to communicate?
00:09
This is a type of language disorder.
00:11
But before we talk about it, let's watch some more details about this disease.
00:16
Let's all watch this.
00:19
Once upon a time, there was a famous Chinese actress.
00:22
She was diagnosed with a condition called aphasia.
00:25
It is a condition that is usually caused by brain or head damage and injury.
00:30
This condition affects the ability of a person to speak, understand, and remember words.
00:39
Did you know that there are different types of aphasia and the symptoms depend on its type?
00:47
How does it start and what should we know about it?
00:52
Let's find out here in Say Me, Doc.
00:56
To answer our questions about aphasia, let's listen to Dr. Donnabelle Chiu, a neurologist.
01:03
Good morning, Doc.
01:04
This is Prof. Fie, together with Diane.
01:06
Rise and shine, Doc.
01:09
Hi. Hello. Good morning.
01:12
Doctor, for those unfamiliar with aphasia, what is aphasia?
01:17
How does it affect the ability of a person to speak or understand?
01:22
Aphasia is a language disorder.
01:27
It is about how we communicate.
01:31
Language has many different components.
01:37
It can be understanding or comprehension, fluency or speech.
01:44
It can be repetition or naming things.
01:48
Aphasia is a disorder of language.
01:52
Any impairment or problems in those components,
01:58
such as understanding, speaking, or naming things,
02:03
can affect the ability of a person to speak or remember words.
02:09
It's actually called aphasia symptoms.
02:13
As mentioned earlier, there are many different types of aphasia.
02:17
It depends on which of the components or domains of language is affected.
02:24
Doc, what are the common symptoms of aphasia?
02:27
Why is it often associated with brain or head injury?
02:33
Most of the time, aphasia is associated with stroke.
02:41
Aphasia is a language disorder.
02:45
It means that the part of the brain that is responsible for language is affected.
02:53
Most of the time, it's the left brain or the dominant brain.
02:57
Any injury to the brain,
03:00
such as stroke, head trauma, or head injury,
03:06
can affect the left brain.
03:10
Aphasia can happen.
03:13
It's not just a stroke or trauma.
03:18
It's not just a stroke or trauma.
03:22
It's not just a stroke or trauma.
03:27
Aphasia can cause head trauma or head injury.
03:31
There are rare conditions such as dementia.
03:35
There is a type of dementia that causes aphasia
03:40
or what is called primary progressive aphasia.
03:44
It's any problems with the left side or left frontal in particular part of the brain
03:52
can cause aphasia.
03:54
Doc, how can we know if a person has aphasia?
03:58
What are the symptoms?
04:03
Like I said earlier,
04:05
aphasia affects the domains of language.
04:09
It affects comprehension, understanding, fluency of speech,
04:15
repetition, and naming.
04:17
To know if a person has aphasia,
04:20
any of those components or all of them can be the same.
04:24
If we talk about comprehension,
04:26
if you ask a person anything,
04:30
they won't understand it.
04:33
But it's still a word.
04:35
Whatever they say,
04:37
sometimes it doesn't make sense.
04:39
That's a type of aphasia called Wernicke's aphasia.
04:45
It's fluent.
04:47
It's a word.
04:49
If you ask them,
04:51
sometimes it's a different word.
04:54
Another type of aphasia is called Broca's aphasia.
04:59
It's non-fluent.
05:01
Meaning, it's understandable.
05:03
It's an intact comprehension.
05:05
They can understand it,
05:07
but it's hard for them to speak.
05:09
Sometimes, they're the type of patient
05:11
where it's hard for them to speak
05:13
or it's hard for them to express
05:15
what they want to say
05:17
or what they need to find
05:19
or they can't find the complete sentence
05:22
that they want to say.
05:24
It's like,
05:26
it's hard for them to verbalize
05:30
or the fluency is affected.
05:32
Another type is difficulty in naming.
05:36
If there's an object to identify,
05:39
they can't say the name of the object.
05:42
But if you ask,
05:44
what is this for?
05:46
How do they use it?
05:48
What is it for?
05:50
How do they use it?
05:52
Or can they write?
05:54
Can they write what they want to say?
05:56
Those are the signs
05:58
that the language can be affected.
06:00
If we test those areas,
06:02
understanding,
06:04
comprehension,
06:06
fluency,
06:08
if the sentence is complete,
06:10
if their pronunciation is correct,
06:12
their answer,
06:14
if there's repetition,
06:16
if they're able to repeat,
06:18
naming,
06:20
if there's an object to identify.
06:22
So there are different types of aphasia.
06:24
But basically,
06:26
those are the first examples
06:28
that I mentioned.
06:31
Alright, Doc.
06:33
In terms of treatment,
06:35
what are the common ways
06:37
for people with aphasia to get better?
06:39
Is there a therapy for this?
06:41
What could be the treatment, Doc?
06:43
So, number one,
06:45
we have to identify
06:47
what is the cause of aphasia.
06:49
Of course, the cause
06:51
will be treated or managed.
06:53
For example,
06:55
if stroke is the cause of aphasia,
06:57
we will manage
06:59
or treat
07:01
the stroke,
07:03
trauma,
07:05
or any other
07:07
illness.
07:09
In terms of rehab,
07:11
like speech therapy,
07:13
we do have
07:15
speech pathologists.
07:17
They are the ones
07:19
who go back and forth
07:21
between speech
07:23
and communication
07:25
or communicating
07:27
with our patients.
07:29
It's a form of therapy.
07:31
At home,
07:33
we always
07:35
tell our patients
07:37
to be patient
07:39
because
07:41
it's hard for them to communicate.
07:43
Sometimes, we need to talk to them
07:45
in a simple way
07:47
so that they can answer
07:49
in short sentences
07:51
and simple.
07:53
Be creative.
07:55
For example,
07:57
if they are not fluent,
07:59
they can't verbalize what they want.
08:01
Give them devices
08:03
so that they can communicate
08:05
and show pictures
08:07
but those therapies
08:09
practice speaking
08:11
through the help of speech
08:13
rehab or speech therapy.
08:15
Alright, Doc.
08:17
Lastly, if we have a friend
08:19
who has aphasia,
08:21
how can we
08:23
help them in
08:25
their daily life?
08:27
So, number one,
08:29
if you are a new patient
08:31
who has aphasia,
08:33
the most important thing is to know
08:35
why they have aphasia.
08:37
Bring them to a doctor or hospital.
08:39
Especially for sudden onset
08:41
of aphasia,
08:43
maybe
08:45
it's a symptom
08:47
of a stroke.
08:49
Bring the patient
08:51
to the hospital
08:53
who has a sudden aphasia.
08:55
If you notice,
08:57
it's important
08:59
for us to know
09:01
the root cause of the aphasia.
09:03
Now, if they are diagnosed
09:05
with aphasia,
09:07
bring them to
09:09
the right management.
09:11
Give them support
09:13
in terms of speech therapy.
09:15
Connect them
09:17
to therapists.
09:19
At home,
09:21
we have to learn
09:23
how to communicate
09:25
with them.
09:27
Make things simple.
09:29
The more creative,
09:31
the better.
09:33
Remove distractions
09:35
so they can concentrate
09:37
and don't have a hard time.
09:39
Basically,
09:41
these are the things we can help
09:43
patients with aphasia.
09:45
Thank you very much,
09:47
Dr. Donabelle, for answering
09:49
our questions about aphasia.
09:51
Remember,
09:53
understanding aphasia is important
09:55
so we can show more support
09:57
for people with
09:59
aphasia.
10:01
Thank you, Doc.
10:03
Thank you. Have a good day.
