Fierce snowstorm moves through Northeast

Ali Reid is in Washington, D.C., where this morning's snowstorm has the downtown area covered in snow. The DC Snowball Fight Association shares when and where they will be hosting their annual event.

00:00outside. We go right now to Allie Reed as she's been covering the snow this

00:05morning and she's been enjoying it. Allie, it is great to see you there out

00:08in your element each time we check in with you a new shot. Of course, things

00:12look so majestic there in D. C. Covered in snow.

00:18Good morning guys. We are live from DuPont Circle. Really exciting people

00:22out and about enjoying the morning today. A crisp 27 degrees here in our

00:27nation's capital. That's snow still coming down. Not nearly as much as what

00:31we saw a few hours ago earlier this morning. But it is that beautiful

00:35picturesque type of snow. I have the yardstick out. I want to show you

00:39something really quickly. It's not the best area to read, unfortunately,

00:43because we're not by the main roadway here. But what I can do is at least show

00:47you how much snow has accumulated. And right now my yardstick is showing about

00:525.5 inches. We are getting very close to what those numbers were looking like

00:57back in January of 2022. Six inches. Then will we surpass it in D. C? I

01:03think we're getting very close to it. I'm sure other areas have already

01:06passed the six inch mark. Now, 17 inches. We saw that back in January of

01:102016. I don't think we'll hit 17 inches today, but certainly a great day for

01:16snowball making snowball fights. All of that. Michael, come on in here on in

01:21here this morning. How are you? You're a part of the D. C. Snowball Fight

01:26Association. Did I say that right? Yes, you did. It's a thing. Yeah, it's a

01:29thing that you and your friends started 15 years ago. Pretty impressive. And

01:34we're still at it. I don't know how that happened. It's a miracle. By the

01:37way, we've been talking to people all morning. Many people have gotten word

01:40that this snowball fight is happening. It's not gonna be here at DuPont

01:44Circle, but it's gonna be at Meridian Hill Park. Is that how you say it? 11

01:48o'clock today. Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park. Uh, 11 a.m.

01:53this morning. We're excited to get, you know, hopefully a couple 100 people

01:57together for some good fun in the snow. And you want to make a perfect snowball

02:01if you can with one of these things right here. Okay, yeah. Show me how

02:04it's done. Give me a little of the low down here. Just scoop. And here you go.

02:08Now, you said if you want to be the most popular person at the party, show up

02:12with one of those. I know. Yeah, this is this. This will make you friends fast.

02:16Absolutely. But it could also maybe ruin friendships if you help the snowball

02:21at someone. Now I know. Now I know. I started the snowball fight here. Go

02:25ahead. Yep, you saw it here first. Okay, so what I've noticed over the last

02:30couple of hours is that earlier this morning it was very powdery and almost

02:35very difficult to create a snowball. We've seen unless you have that right

02:39over the last hour, you hear that pelting noise. That's sleet. It is a

02:44wintry mix right now. A nice wintry mix, which is great. So because of that,

02:48it's making it a little bit easier to form those snowballs. Exactly. You want

02:52you want just the right combination of, you know, white stuff to make it easy,

02:57easy enough to pack. Not hard enough that's gonna hurt people and leave a

03:01bruise, God forbid. But yeah, it's looking good. Like we got good

03:05conditions. You usually need at least three or four inches of snow on the

03:08ground for us to actually call an event. And, you know, it's happening here

03:12today. We got it. So we're we're on for today. And I just wanted to tell people

03:16if you want to know exactly when and where we're doing things can follow us

03:25and or X and instagram at D. C. Snowball. And we have an official

03:29charity partner, the Special Olympics Special Olympics D. C. They're doing a

03:32polar plunge in Navy Yard on February 22nd. You can donate money or even take

03:37the plunge. I love it. I love all of it. And we love the Special Olympics.

03:40They're a great organization. So I'm happy to hear that you guys are

03:42partnering with them really quickly before we send it back to studio. Uh,

03:4615 years ago when you guys kicked things off 2000 people, if you can

03:51imagine right here, you were a part of that snowball fight. And then you said

03:57we need to do it from here on out. 15 years later, you've been trying to do

04:00it every year. Yeah, I mean, to get a snowball fight here, you need at least

04:04a foot or a foot and a half. And that's very, very rare. That's why we're not

04:08gathering here today. But this was our birthplace and we will come back here

04:12someday. Just not today. Not enough snow for that. Unfortunately, I think

04:17many people are counting their blessings that we're seeing snow. You

04:19said that there's been a number of years over the last 15 years, at least

04:22five that you could remember where there was no snow at all. Did you have

04:25to bring that? I'm so sorry. So traumatic. We had a few just snowless

04:30winters and it's hard to get over. We're back and better than ever, baby.

04:34That's right. I love it, guys. We're live from DuPont Circle. We'll

04:37continue to check in with you. We're getting close. Six inches of snow. I

04:42think we will end up beating January of 2022. Look at that. That is the

04:47most beautiful snowball. That's nice. I gotta get myself. Gotta get one of

04:51those. You throw it at the camera. Should I do it? I don't know. It's not

04:55my equipment. I don't wanna get in trouble. He tried. The good news is

04:59that Ellie's not a good aim. Thanks, Ellie. You're doing great out there.
