This is RSP, another inspiring Filipina.
00:04
This is the heart that we will talk about today.
00:08
But before that, let's watch this first.
00:13
Meet Sally Ria Malayan, a Filipina who's not just saving lives, but also changing them.
00:20
From being a top-notcher in the 2010 nurse licensure exam in the Philippines,
00:25
she went to Norway in 2012 as an au pair.
00:28
But her journey didn't end there.
00:31
Because in 2013, she also established her charity organization,
00:36
The Filipino Helping Society,
00:38
to help those affected by the Yolanda earthquake
00:41
and to fight for the independence and hope of Filipinos and other minority groups in Norway.
00:48
From saving lives in the ER to building bridges in the community,
00:52
Sally really proved that Filipinos can shine anywhere in the world.
00:57
So let's find out Sally Ria Malayan's story here on She Shines.
01:06
And now, we have with us Sally Ria Malayan.
01:10
Good morning and welcome to Rising Shine Filipinas.
01:13
This is Prof P, together with Meiji.
01:16
Happy New Year!
01:19
Happy New Year and good morning, Prof P,
01:22
and to all the other hosts and viewers.
01:27
Good morning.
01:28
Happy New Year, Sally.
01:30
So can you tell us, your story is very interesting,
01:33
from being a top-notcher and then you went to Norway.
01:36
How did your Filipino Helping Society start in Norway?
01:40
And what was your inspiration for establishing this organization?
01:46
Okay, so,
01:47
so,
01:50
long story, so in 2010,
01:54
I passed the board exam, made it to the top.
01:57
And then 2012,
01:59
I moved to Norway.
02:00
And the OPR, if you're not familiar,
02:04
this is a cultural exchange program.
02:08
So I went to Norway,
02:10
and I have a host family of Norwegians.
02:13
And there,
02:14
I presented the culture of Filipinos to them.
02:18
And in return,
02:20
I also learned how Norwegians live.
02:24
But it wasn't easy,
02:26
because my aim was to become a nurse,
02:30
or practice my nursing profession here also.
02:34
But it's not that easy,
02:36
it's not that easy to recognize,
02:39
even if you're a top-notcher,
02:40
even if your grades are good,
02:44
it really starts at the beginning.
02:47
So,
02:49
that was 2012,
02:51
and it was very challenging.
02:53
The chemistry of the family wasn't good,
02:59
but then, in 2013, in November,
03:03
Yolanda, or Hayan,
03:06
was struck by the Philippines, our country.
03:09
And,
03:10
even though my situation was difficult,
03:12
because I wasn't practicing nursing,
03:15
it was frustrating,
03:18
at the same time,
03:20
we had a goal,
03:21
but we didn't achieve it.
03:23
And,
03:25
we also had a lot of expectations,
03:27
back home.
03:28
But,
03:29
when I found out what happened to our countrymen,
03:33
that's when I started to realize,
03:35
yeah,
03:36
the things I've been through,
03:38
the challenges I've faced,
03:39
now,
03:40
this is nothing compared to people
03:44
who lost their homes,
03:45
who lost their loved ones.
03:49
So, that's where I started.
03:51
Four days after,
03:52
in November 8,
03:53
in Hayan, or Yolanda,
03:55
on November 12,
03:57
the so-called
03:59
Tapit Kamay-Ibangan na Pilipinas was established.
04:01
And then,
04:02
gathered help,
04:04
even though I didn't have a network here yet,
04:07
my main focus was to send help.
04:11
Actually,
04:12
we were able to gather help,
04:14
not only in Norway,
04:16
but also in Denmark,
04:17
neighboring countries here in Scandinavia.
04:21
Also,
04:22
in other Asian countries.
04:24
And then,
04:25
I flew back to the Philippines,
04:27
first time.
04:29
The same,
04:30
before I spent a year here in Norway,
04:34
to really personally give the help.
04:37
And we were able to help 1,000 families
04:40
during that time.
04:41
So,
04:42
that was just the beginning.
04:45
And,
04:46
I'll just stop here,
04:47
because I can keep talking.
04:49
So,
04:51
and then,
04:52
later on,
04:54
on my journey,
04:58
I was trying to practice,
05:02
so I studied,
05:03
until,
05:05
the organization,
05:08
it was active,
05:09
the year after Yolanda,
05:11
and then,
05:12
there was a slight pause,
05:14
because there were a lot of requirements here.
05:17
So,
05:19
that's where I focused,
05:21
and from there,
05:22
like a cultural exchange program participant,
05:26
I became a student,
05:27
because I needed to study first,
05:29
to know how to become a nurse here in Norway.
05:32
Then,
05:33
I got a job,
05:34
became a permanent resident,
05:36
then became a citizen,
05:38
Norwegian citizen.
05:40
And there,
05:41
along the way,
05:42
on that journey,
05:45
I saw how difficult it was.
05:48
So, I said,
05:50
it's not just our fellow Filipinos
05:53
who need help,
05:55
our fellow Filipinos here in Norway also need it.
05:59
Not because you're in another country,
06:02
that's okay,
06:03
it's already solved.
06:05
There are still a lot of trials and tribulations,
06:08
and it's more difficult now,
06:09
because you have no one with you,
06:10
you don't have your family members to support you,
06:14
and adjustments to the weather,
06:16
adjustments to,
06:18
you know,
06:19
integrating with the country,
06:21
and there are still a lot of trials,
06:25
that I've been through and succeeded in.
06:30
Looking back,
06:31
in 2020,
06:32
when the pandemic happened,
06:33
I said,
06:34
I'm established,
06:35
I'm okay,
06:36
I'm married,
06:37
and I said,
06:38
this is really my passion.
06:39
So,
06:40
I'll go back,
06:41
and this time,
06:42
it's not just our fellow Filipinos in the Philippines,
06:44
but also our fellow Filipinos here,
06:46
and other minority groups.
06:49
There are a lot of achievements, right?
06:51
That's the history.
06:54
So, I'll just say,
06:55
stop me,
06:56
because we can go straight here.
06:57
Yes, because,
06:58
you know what,
06:59
there are so many milestones
07:00
that your organization was able to accomplish,
07:03
for being called as
07:05
Kapit Kamai Ibangon ng Pilipinas,
07:07
from Yolanda,
07:08
one of the most disastrous happenings
07:10
that we have here in the country.
07:12
Now,
07:13
we want to know,
07:14
in so many ways,
07:15
to help you,
07:16
and the execution of your help,
07:18
what is your dream
07:20
for FHS,
07:21
in the coming years?
07:23
How do you see the future of your organization?
07:26
And what are the steps that you will do
07:29
to achieve these?
07:33
My dreams,
07:34
actually,
07:35
is to be able to sustain ourselves.
07:37
Because,
07:38
it's like a punch in the stomach,
07:40
because you will help your fellow countrymen,
07:42
and
07:43
we need, of course,
07:44
fundings,
07:45
and
07:46
you know,
07:47
by the grace of God,
07:48
the government of Norway
07:49
is able to see
07:50
the efforts,
07:51
that's why we will give points,
07:53
and we will be able to help a lot here,
07:55
because,
07:57
there,
07:58
of course,
07:59
not only Filipinos
08:00
are here,
08:01
there are also immigrants.
08:02
So,
08:03
to be able to give enough
08:07
attention,
08:08
enough support,
08:09
that's important.
08:10
And,
08:11
I don't have a dream
08:13
for the organization,
08:14
but,
08:15
to be able to continue to help.
08:17
Because,
08:18
as long as there are
08:19
our fellow countrymen here,
08:21
and other minorities in Norway,
08:24
the need continues.
08:25
So,
08:26
to be able to sustain,
08:27
to last,
08:28
until it passes,
08:29
maybe,
08:30
to the next generation.
08:32
And,
08:33
to spread,
08:34
because,
08:35
what we have in FHS
08:37
is a helping cycle.
08:39
So,
08:40
we will help you
08:41
with what you need,
08:45
like the integration,
08:46
language,
08:47
because it's Norwegian,
08:48
right?
08:49
And,
08:50
in return,
08:51
you just give what you have.
08:53
Because,
08:54
like I said to you,
08:55
frustration,
08:56
when I went to Norway,
08:58
I have skills,
08:59
I have what I'm good at,
09:01
but,
09:02
I was set aside there,
09:03
because,
09:04
I wasn't approved.
09:05
So,
09:06
that's what we do.
09:07
Whatever you have,
09:08
bring it from our country.
09:10
Okay,
09:11
bring it out,
09:12
let's use it,
09:13
in our programs here.
09:15
And,
09:16
so that,
09:17
let's say,
09:18
we don't neglect you.
09:19
And,
09:20
in return,
09:21
we will give you
09:22
a lot of opportunities.
09:23
Then,
09:24
that's it.
09:25
So,
09:26
it becomes a cycle.
09:27
And,
09:28
it reintroduces
09:29
help,
09:30
benefits,
09:31
not just to our volunteers,
09:32
but to other people.
09:33
So,
09:34
that's it.
09:35
That's what we do.
09:36
We maintain the relationship.
09:39
Because,
09:40
our motto is,
09:41
to help our second home.
09:44
This is our second home,
09:45
so,
09:46
we are family here.
09:48
We will help as much as we can,
09:50
and,
09:51
we will also help others.
09:52
So,
09:53
that's it.
09:54
It's fun, right?
09:55
It's like you have a support group,
09:57
an instant support group.
09:58
Yes,
09:59
and the way of teaching is wide.
10:00
Yes,
10:01
it's wide,
10:02
but,
10:03
it's also about integration.
10:04
Not just to our fellow Filipinos in Norway,
10:05
but to our fellow Filipinos here in the Philippines.
10:08
For that,
10:09
thank you.
10:10
Thank you very much
10:11
for sharing your inspiring story,
10:14
Sally Ria Malayan.
10:16
God bless you,
10:17
and may you live long.
10:18
Thank you, Sally.
