00:00Manchester United were hoped for a brighter 2025 after their year came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

00:09The truth be told, it could have been a greater margin of victory for the visiting side,

00:14who were two goals up within the first 20 minutes.

00:17Goals from Joel Whelton and Alexander Izak, they also had a third disallowed offside.

00:22The margin was far greater than that though, Newcastle dominated from start to finish.

00:27Manchester United were rejuvenated in the second half of the match, but it was well over by then.

00:32Ruben Amirani made four changes from the side that lost to Wolves on Boxing Day.

00:37Marcus Rashford was back in the squad, he was the only substitute on the bench though.

00:42He was only really needed to make up the numbers of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Lugati, both suspended for this match.

00:49Matthijs de Ligt came back in, so did Joshua Zirkzee, the number 10 role behind Rasmus Huygens.

00:54He only lasted 42 minutes before he was humped by Fabio Neyno.

00:59There were cheers and some applause when Joshua Zirkzee was taken off.

01:03He was born, but the truth is that any United player could have been taken off,

01:07and there was such a cool start to the match.

01:10Sandro Martínez and Casemiro both really struggled as well.

01:14United could have been three or four behind on the halftime break,

01:18but they did waste some good opportunities of their own.

01:21Rasmus Huygens had a shot just wide and it got a goal.

01:25Harry Maguire headed against the post, and Lenny Yorow set a header just wide in the second half.

01:31And as we said, there was no real contest.

01:34United were much better in the second half, but the foul was so low to beat that that really isn't an achievement either.

01:40Ruben Amirani did a great job on any footballer's team tonight.

01:44A wasted squad of talent, so many players who just weren't good enough.

01:48And once again, the quality was there to show.

01:51Newcastle fans, an excellent voice here in an empty Old Trafford.

01:59I'm making absolutely no complaint about that one.
