Francis opens second Holy Door with message of hope to Rome's main prison

The Pope's opening of the Holy Door was part of major events in the Catholic Church’s once-every-quarter-century celebration that is expected to attract about 32 million pilgrims to Rome.

00:00Pope Francis has inaugurated his holy year at Rome's main prison, bringing a message of hope to inmates.

00:08The opening of the second holy door at the Basilica on Thursday also officially kicked off the Jubilee year,

00:15a church tradition dating to 1300 that nowadays occurs every 25 years.

00:21Francis dedicated the 2025 Jubilee to hope and made clear that prisoners would be an important part of it.

00:28I wanted each of us, all of us who are here, inside and outside, to have the possibility to open the doors of the heart

00:43and understand that hope does not disappoint.

00:49The door's inauguration comes after that of the holy door at St. Peter's Basilica,

00:54which Pope Francis opened on Christmas Eve.

00:57According to Antigone's 2024 report, 88 prisoners killed themselves in Italian lockups this year, more than any other year.
