Rome prepares for Pope Francis' second Jubilee

In recent months, the city has been transformed into an open-air construction site working towards accommodating some 35 million expected visitors for the Jubilee.

00:00Starting this Christmas Eve, the Eternal City will welcome an estimated 35 million pilgrims

00:09for the 2025 Jubilee, and Rome is gearing up for the occasion with much of the city

00:15transforming into an open-air construction site for the past few months. Monuments are

00:20being restored, roads repaired, and pedestrian areas redesigned to prepare for the stream

00:26of visitors.

00:29Despite opposition claims that the city is falling behind on numerous projects, Rome's

00:34mayor says the city will be ready in time.

00:47This will be the second Jubilee led by Pope Francis. Following the one in 2015, the central

00:53message of the Holy Year is to foster hope and trust. The pontiff has called on clergy

00:58and religious orders to lead by example, and to help tackle the housing crisis.

01:23The Jubilee will officially begin with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica.

01:32Over the following days, the doors of Rome's major basilica will also open, and will remain

01:38so until the end of the celebrations.
