00:00What's the role of culture when it comes to tackling climate change?

00:05That was a question being explored by global leaders and organisations

00:09at a pivotal event at COP29 in Baku.

00:15For our second high-level meeting on culture-based climate action,

00:18we brought about 30 countries and organisations to the debate here in Baku, COP29.

00:24We have approved the terms of reference of the Group of Friends of culture-based climate action

00:29which lays the path forward for how we want to manage this strategy for next year at COP30 in Berlin.

00:41The event marked a significant step forward in integrating cultural strategies into climate policies,

00:47recognising the essential role of cultural heritage and creativity in driving sustainability.

00:54And the approval of these terms of reference sets the stage for collaborative efforts leading into next year's COP30 in Belém in Brazil.

01:09This meeting is important because the intention of the Group of Friends and the new members

01:15is to put the cultural action into the climate change action

01:21and it's really important to bring the cultural-related topics and the cultural-based actions into the climate agenda.

01:32From policy-making to on-the-ground initiatives,

01:35the newly established Group of Friends of culture-based climate action aims to empower communities,

01:42protect ecosystems and highlight the cultural dimensions of resilience

01:47as the global focus shifts towards 2025's COP,

01:51as discussions deepen and participants emphasise that culture isn't just a backdrop for climate action,

01:57it's a driving force offering creative solutions and inspiring communities worldwide.

02:04So the most exciting thing that happened today was that the COP29 presidency attended the second ministerial on culture-based climate action.

02:13What does that mean?

02:15That means that we are actually progressing on our goal to have culture recognised as part of the UNFCCC process.

02:23Our group of members finally have a chance to understand better

02:27how they can use their indigenous, ancestral and local community knowledge to fight the biggest crisis of our world.

02:36From ancestral wisdom to innovative artistic practices,

02:40culture can offer a bridge between tradition and transformative action.

02:46As COP29 concludes, the focus now shifts to COP30, where these strategies will continue to evolve.
