We'll be right back with more on the week 15 NFL Sunday slate
00:07
significant games, important injuries to detail for you live
00:12
right here on this Monday on the early line. That means the
00:15
pro football doc. Doctor David Chow joins us bright and early
00:19
to look back on a Sunday. Doctor Chow as always, we
00:23
appreciate the time. Thank you for being here. Happy to be
00:27
here. Lots of injuries to talk about, but thankfully most of
00:30
them are not. Oh my God or season ending stuff. Well,
00:36
Doctor Chow did feel like an oh my God moment about eight
00:39
minutes remaining in regulation yesterday between the Browns
00:43
and the Chiefs is Patrick Mahomes limped off the field
00:46
with what the Chiefs are calling a high ankle sprain. Of
00:50
course, that will get a ton of conversation and focus this
00:54
week around the National Football League. Doctor Chow
00:56
you and your team at Sports Injury Central when you saw the
01:00
play and the hit yesterday in the fourth quarter in the land.
01:03
What was your initial evaluation? What do you make of
01:06
what Mahomes Andy Reed and the Chiefs have said after we
01:11
looked at it and thought it was a right high ankle sprain and
01:15
we actually felt that he could return to the game, but Andy
01:19
Reed was being smart and not putting him back in and they've
01:24
said that afterwards. Now, I get it in the vernacular. Now
01:29
we make a big deal out of high ankle sprains versus low ankle
01:32
sprains, but just to remind viewers Patrick Mahomes has
01:37
played through a very similar high ankle sprain before
01:40
remember back to the 2022 divisional playoffs versus
01:45
Jacksonville. It happened in the first half and then the world
01:49
went nutso when he got sent into the locker room for
01:52
precautionary x-rays. Then he returned to the sideline and he
01:56
did not immediately re-enter the game and the backup finished
02:01
the drive and even took the kneel down after that. And I'm
02:05
saying live, I was saying live in my halftime injury chat on
02:08
at Pro Football Doc, Patrick Mahomes is coming back to this
02:12
game, even though he's got the high ankle sprain. He did, they
02:15
won in the second half. Then after the game, Ian Rappaport
02:18
said he's got a high ankle sprain and everyone says he's
02:20
out for the rest of the playoffs. I'm like, no, he's
02:22
going to play through. He's going to change his game, change
02:25
his arm angle, not push off. And guess what? He beat the Eagles
02:30
that year in the Super Bowl, won the conference and beat the
02:33
Eagles. He's done this before. Will it affect him? Yes, he's
02:37
able to modify his game. If he were a running back, this would
02:40
be a much bigger deal. He's able to adapt. Now with all that
02:44
being said, he may miss the next game or two because it's
02:49
a different situation. It's not must win for the Chiefs. They
02:53
play two games in the next 10 days, including on Christmas and
02:58
this Saturday. They're tough opponents, the Texans and the
03:02
Steelers, but I think it's too early to tell whether he will
03:06
play or not, but don't worry in the infamous words of
03:11
Schwarzenegger, he'll be back. It's just a matter of when and
03:14
it'll be back well ahead of the playoffs. Yeah, we also saw
03:18
him dock in the Super Bowl, get re-injured before halftime and
03:21
come back in the second half and play very well, beating the
03:23
Eagles in that Super Bowl. We watched primetime football last
03:26
night, Seattle Doc trying to win the NFC West, but we saw
03:29
Gino Smith take a shot to the leg and did not return. What's
03:32
the prognosis for Gino Smith? What did you see? Yeah, he got
03:36
hit as he jumped up in the air and he got hit on the back of
03:41
the shin, right shin and calf. The good news is and his knee
03:46
got folded up. The good news is structurally, we didn't see
03:49
anything and sometimes what we don't see is better news than
03:53
what we do see and we didn't see anything there. Mike McDonald
03:56
has said there's no structural damage now. I think it was not
04:00
impossible that he could return to the game. Obviously, he was
04:03
hobbled. So I put that right now unless the MRI surprises us
04:07
with something like meniscus, which technically I guess is
04:10
structural, but it's not a ligament. The ligaments are fine.
04:14
Don't see this as significant right now. And let's hope that
04:19
the MRI confirms that. So, Dr. Chow, as we look at some of
04:23
those contenders around the National Football League, the
04:26
Detroit Lions yesterday in the highest scoring game of the
04:29
season against Buffalo have their 11 game win streak snap.
04:33
Detroit has dealt with a litany of injuries on the defensive
04:36
side of the football this year and even more significant ones
04:41
yesterday, including Aleem McNeil and one of their best
04:44
defensive backs in Carleton Davis. After the game, Dan
04:47
Campbell said both are season-ending. Do you agree with
04:51
the head coach in the Motor City's assessment?
04:55
Well, it's hard to argue with a coach that gets a medical
04:58
report from doctors that examine players versus my looking at
05:02
video and that's a pretty definitive statement. Looking at
05:06
video of Aleem McNeil and then the jaw injury of Carleton
05:09
Davis. My hope is he means regular season ending and not
05:15
complete season ending, but it remains to be determined.
05:21
Doc, we're going to get to some Monday night football action
05:23
tonight. You know, the site's been doing very well with some
05:25
of these at six score.com. I'm looking at Atlanta and Las
05:28
Vegas. There is a big discrepancy tonight between health
05:32
between Atlanta and Las Vegas. Can you share some of that
05:35
insight tonight with us?
05:37
Oh, there's no question. You know, the Raiders got lots of
05:40
issues and Aiden O'Connell is listed as questionable, but he
05:43
hasn't practiced all week, even though it's quote just a bone
05:47
bruise. Don't see it likely that he plays. Max Crosby has been
05:51
now shut down with surgery. They've got defensive issues at
05:55
cornerback and other positions. So there's no question of that
05:59
as the healthier side. But then again, you know, Kirk Cousins
06:03
hasn't exactly been on a hot Street six score. The picks the
06:07
guaranteed three-star picks have been seven and one and I believe
06:10
the guys have another guaranteed pick for this Monday double
06:14
header with a free pick guaranteed pick situation.
06:19
And you better find that at six score.com. That is SIC score
06:23
dot-com. Dr. Chow, when we look at the first game of the two
06:27
tonight in Minneapolis out of the Vikings and the Bears stack
06:30
up in terms of the field view.
06:33
Well, you know, the Bears are actually relatively healthy
06:37
defensively. The Vikings know Stefan Gilmore defensively
06:42
overall. This is not a horrible health game, but the Bears have
06:47
had so many changes that you know, the coaching staff and
06:51
other things the Vikings, you know need to win right? The Packers
06:55
are nipping at their heels and and they're in theory if they
06:59
win they're tied with the Lions atop the NFC North. So it'll
07:03
be an interesting matchup for the Vikings.
07:06
Certainly will be 12 and 2 would be the mark for Minnesota if
07:10
they can match that of Detroit with a victory over the Bears
07:14
tonight, the pro football doc. Dr. David Chow as always we
07:17
appreciate your time here on this Monday more on the early
07:21
line comes up next.
