This morning, we are joined by a special guest who has a special collection of sports memorabilia.
00:08
Iconic items that have a deep meaning and history in the world of sports.
00:14
And to tell us the story behind his sports memorabilia collection,
00:18
we will be joined live here in the studio by Dr. Michael Rico Messina.
00:23
Good morning and welcome back to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:26
Good morning, Audrey, and good morning to all the viewers of Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:32
Okay, let's go back.
00:34
For the knowledge of our viewers, why did you choose to collect sports memorabilia?
00:40
Actually, I started with basketball magazines.
00:44
I was a kid in the 90s and back then, sports magazines like SWM, Scoreboard were popular.
00:52
Then during the pandemic, I decided to evolve my collection.
01:00
So from there, I evolved into Philippine Basketball Memorabilia.
01:05
Okay, but what was the first thing you collected?
01:09
First, it was the magazines.
01:13
Were these magazines from the 90s, 80s, or 70s?
01:18
So actually, the first magazines I collected were from the 90s.
01:22
And from there, I tried to buy from the 80s and 70s.
01:26
So I was already backtracking in the history of basketball.
01:29
Dr. Michael, for example, if you really want to collect a memorabilia, but it's not available in the Philippines, how do you find it?
01:40
Usually, we have friends in other countries who are also looking for possible basketball memorabilia.
01:48
Sometimes, they show it to me and when I'm interested, we can send it back to the Philippines.
01:55
So we make arrangements to send it back to our country.
02:01
I read in the U.S., when it comes to NBA players, sometimes they sign autographs.
02:10
So how do you know if you have a memorabilia item?
02:15
So in my collection, I have already collected a lot of in-person autographs.
02:22
So the player in front of me, or the coach, or the celebrity, they sign the item in front of me.
02:29
So now, that will be my basis.
02:31
When I see that kind of signature, I compare it to the original signature of the person so I can check if it's really legit.
02:40
And there are other evidences, right?
02:42
That it really came from an athlete, right?
02:47
But anyway, is there another item you want to collect that you had a hard time getting?
02:53
Ah, maybe this one, sir.
02:56
This ball.
03:02
This one, sir, Audrey.
03:03
This used to be very popular, right?
03:04
Yes.
03:05
So this is a ball from the 1910s.
03:08
1910, right?
03:09
Yes.
03:10
So that ball is actually from the start of the history of Philippine basketball.
03:15
So if you look at it, it's made of leather.
03:18
Then, it has thorns on the outside.
03:22
So it's different from the ball that we see today.
03:26
So that's the ball we're going to compare here, right?
03:28
Yes.
03:29
Okay.
03:30
Sir Michael, please explain to us the history of this ball.
03:34
1912, who used this ball?
03:36
Yes.
03:37
So this ball was found in a school in Batangas that was supposed to be demolished.
03:45
Then, the physical education department found this ball.
03:49
So back then, we had tournaments that were called the Philippine Carnival.
03:55
So the schools from different areas of the country would compete to become champions.
04:02
So it means that basketball has been in the Philippines for more than 100 years.
04:06
Yes, that's right.
04:07
Since 1912, this has already existed.
04:08
That's right.
04:09
And I remember your first story to us.
04:13
The people who played basketball in the Philippines were women.
04:17
That's right, sir Audrey.
04:18
Because what the Bureau of Education did was assign sports to women and men.
04:27
So back then, basketball was just a new sport.
04:31
It was just invented by James Naismith.
04:33
So now, basketball was initially assigned to women.
04:37
But eventually, it also picked up with men.
04:40
And now, generally, most men play basketball.
04:45
Well, RSP, this ball that I'm holding, this is the first basketball ball.
04:50
If you compare it to the ball that we use today, this is heavier.
04:55
This is what we usually use today.
04:57
This is a molten basketball.
05:02
Comparably, this is heavier than what I want.
05:05
Yes.
05:06
It's like I'm holding a coconut.
05:08
If you look at it and it hits your face, you'll definitely fall asleep.
05:14
But anyway, this is the change of times.
05:17
100 years after, this is what we use today.
05:20
Okay, let's explain one by one.
05:22
Is this a rubber shoe? Where did this come from?
05:25
So this is a game-used shoe.
05:28
But not only who wore this.
05:31
Justin Brown wore this.
05:34
Oh, okay.
05:35
Our naturalized Filipino player who plays gilas.
05:40
So he wore this in his first gilas game against Lebanon.
05:44
I think it was March 2023.
05:47
I think the shoes were Freak 4.
05:51
Then there's an inscription here, Sir Audrey.
05:57
So there's an inscription here, Sir Justin.
06:02
Okay.
06:03
His first gilas game.
06:04
Ah, this is his first gilas game.
06:05
For those who are asking, what is the size of Brownlee's foot?
06:09
Here, I can see it.
06:10
Size 14 US.
06:11
14, yes.
06:12
Okay.
06:13
Here it is.
06:14
What is this jacket?
06:16
Ah, so this jacket,
06:18
as a kid in the 90s,
06:20
one of the teams I played with
06:22
was the Hinebra.
06:23
Hinebra.
06:24
Never Say Die.
06:25
In 1996, the name of their jersey was Hinebra.
06:30
Okay.
06:31
So that's an actual team jacket from 1996.
06:35
There.
06:36
Then there are some signatures of some of the players who played for that team.
06:40
You know, I was also a fan of the Hinebra in the 90s.
06:42
Ah.
06:43
That's why I'm happy that our guest here is Vince,
06:45
the Prince.
06:46
The Prince.
06:47
There.
06:48
This ball,
06:49
who signed it and where did you use it?
06:51
So this ball also has sentimental value to me
06:54
because Samahang Basketball of the Philippines
06:59
tasked me to have players and coaches sign this ball
07:05
so that the SBP can have a memorabilia.
07:08
I also have my own memorabilia.
07:11
So that ball is from early this year.
07:15
We have legs, right?
07:17
Back then, our opponent was Taiwan.
07:20
So in the dugout, the SBP sent me there
07:23
and the ball was assigned to all the players and coaches.
07:27
Okay.
07:28
Even my coach team has a signature here.
07:30
Yes.
07:31
So players and coaches, Sir Audrey.
07:33
Anyway, since you know a lot about sports,
07:36
you're also a part of PTV Sports.
07:38
When do you watch PTV Sports?
07:41
I was given the opportunity by PTV Sports
07:44
to have a segment called Treasures of the Game.
07:50
So this is aired on PTV Sports every Wednesday morning.
07:55
All right. Let's look forward to it.
07:57
Again, thank you for giving us your time this morning
08:00
and for sharing your story as a sports memorabilia collector.
08:04
Dr. Michael Rico Messina.
08:06
Thank you again.
