00:25This is what the streets of Damascus looked like on Sunday.

00:28No movement, no business, lifeless almost, the calm after the storm.

00:33That's because Syria's rebel forces imposed a curfew on the capital on the first day since

00:38overthrowing the country's longtime president Bashar al-Assad.

00:41The curfew is 13 hours long, starting from 4pm local time through to 5am on Monday.

00:48It's a stark difference from the scenes of cheering and celebration that erupted after

00:52news broke of the end of Assad's reign.

00:55And Syrians, taking in a new reality, one that brought a sense of calmness to the streets

01:00of Damascus and an end to the fighting, were happy to oblige.

01:04They're hoping this newly found peace can last, and the leadership of the rebel coalition

01:09which overthrew Assad is echoing the same sentiment.

01:35It's a new beginning for the country that's been under President Bashar al-Assad's rule

01:38for 24 years, and emotions are continuing to run high.

02:05Abu Mohammad al-Ghulani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militant group, has appointed

02:10ex-Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali to oversee the transitional government.

02:15Al-Jalali served as Prime Minister under Assad and is tasked with ensuring state institutions

02:20and social services run uninterrupted until a permanent political solution is reached.

02:32Syrians across the world rejoiced the downfall of Assad's regime on Sunday.

02:38In Istanbul, people stormed the Syrian consulate, took down its flag and waved the green Syrian

02:43independence flag claimed by opposition groups.

02:48Hundreds of Syrians in Germany also took to the streets in a Berlin neighborhood famous

02:53for its Arabic culture.

02:56Meanwhile, foreign leaders have called for an inclusive political transition.

03:02Turkey's foreign minister urged international actors to preserve Syria's territorial integrity.

03:08In a post on X, the EU's foreign chief, Kaya Kalas, said the EU's priority is to ensure

03:13security, vowing to work with all constructive partners in Syria and the region.

03:19Also on X, French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the Syrian people, sending

03:24wishes for peace, freedom and unity.

03:27German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote that religious communities and minorities must

03:31be protected now and in the future.

03:42Romania's far-right presidential candidate, Kalin Drogescu, stood outside a closed polling

03:47station on Sunday, in protest of the second round of the country's presidential election

03:52being cancelled.

03:54The country's top court made an unprecedented decision to annul the first round of the vote,

03:59following intelligence alleging Russian interference on social media to promote the so-called TikTok

04:05messiah.

04:14George Simeon, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, echoed Drogescu

04:20in denouncing the election's cancellation.

04:23After topping the polls in the first round, Drogescu was set to face the Liberal candidate

04:28Elena Laskony on Sunday.

04:30New dates will be set to rerun the presidential vote from scratch.
