Syria looks to carve a new future after the sudden end to 24 years of rule under President
00:07
Bashar al-Assad.
00:08
Relief mixed with caution as world leaders react to the downfall of Syria's President
00:17
Bashar al-Assad.
00:25
This is what the streets of Damascus looked like on Sunday.
00:28
No movement, no business, lifeless almost, the calm after the storm.
00:33
That's because Syria's rebel forces imposed a curfew on the capital on the first day since
00:38
overthrowing the country's longtime president Bashar al-Assad.
00:41
The curfew is 13 hours long, starting from 4pm local time through to 5am on Monday.
00:48
It's a stark difference from the scenes of cheering and celebration that erupted after
00:52
news broke of the end of Assad's reign.
00:55
And Syrians, taking in a new reality, one that brought a sense of calmness to the streets
01:00
of Damascus and an end to the fighting, were happy to oblige.
01:04
They're hoping this newly found peace can last, and the leadership of the rebel coalition
01:09
which overthrew Assad is echoing the same sentiment.
01:35
It's a new beginning for the country that's been under President Bashar al-Assad's rule
01:38
for 24 years, and emotions are continuing to run high.
02:05
Abu Mohammad al-Ghulani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militant group, has appointed
02:10
ex-Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali to oversee the transitional government.
02:15
Al-Jalali served as Prime Minister under Assad and is tasked with ensuring state institutions
02:20
and social services run uninterrupted until a permanent political solution is reached.
02:32
Syrians across the world rejoiced the downfall of Assad's regime on Sunday.
02:38
In Istanbul, people stormed the Syrian consulate, took down its flag and waved the green Syrian
02:43
independence flag claimed by opposition groups.
02:48
Hundreds of Syrians in Germany also took to the streets in a Berlin neighborhood famous
02:53
for its Arabic culture.
02:56
Meanwhile, foreign leaders have called for an inclusive political transition.
03:02
Turkey's foreign minister urged international actors to preserve Syria's territorial integrity.
03:08
In a post on X, the EU's foreign chief, Kaya Kalas, said the EU's priority is to ensure
03:13
security, vowing to work with all constructive partners in Syria and the region.
03:19
Also on X, French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the Syrian people, sending
03:24
wishes for peace, freedom and unity.
03:27
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote that religious communities and minorities must
03:31
be protected now and in the future.
03:42
Romania's far-right presidential candidate, Kalin Drogescu, stood outside a closed polling
03:47
station on Sunday, in protest of the second round of the country's presidential election
03:52
being cancelled.
03:54
The country's top court made an unprecedented decision to annul the first round of the vote,
03:59
following intelligence alleging Russian interference on social media to promote the so-called TikTok
04:05
messiah.
04:14
George Simeon, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, echoed Drogescu
04:20
in denouncing the election's cancellation.
04:23
After topping the polls in the first round, Drogescu was set to face the Liberal candidate
04:28
Elena Laskony on Sunday.
04:30
New dates will be set to rerun the presidential vote from scratch.
