00:09Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, gets a new metro whose first construction

00:20Syria's armed forces confirmed on Saturday that rebel troops managed to take over large

00:25parts of Aleppo, killing dozens of soldiers, and is preparing for a counter-attack.

00:31In a major setback for President Assad, thousands of Syrian insurgents broke through government

00:36defense lines in Aleppo on Friday, facing little resistance from government troops.

00:41The surprise attack was led by Islamist rebels, jolting the front lines of the Syrian civil

00:46war that began in 2011.

00:49It was the first time government troops battled rebels in Syria's largest city since 2016,

00:55when President Assad regained control of the city.

00:58The insurgents entered Aleppo's western neighborhood after taking control of dozens of villages

01:03south of the city since Wednesday.

01:06They were seen tearing down posters of Assad, stepping on some and burning others.

01:11Friday's push into Aleppo followed weeks of low-level violence, including government attacks

01:16on opposition-held areas.

01:22Dozens of people have protested for a second night against the Georgian government's decision

01:27to suspend European Union accession negotiations.

01:31Protesters swarmed the parliament in the capital, Tbilisi, with some trying to break the metal

01:35gates to the building.

01:37Riot police used tear gas and pepper spray to push protesters back.

01:42That elicited an angry response from the country's pro-EU president, Salome Zubishvili, who called

01:47it Russian-style repression in a post on X.

01:51The ruling Georgian Dream's victory in October's election sparked massive demonstrations, with

01:56the opposition claiming the vote was rigged.

01:59That led EU lawmakers to press for a rerun under international supervision.

02:04But Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze hit back, accusing the EU of blackmail and

02:09suspended accession talks until 2028.

02:12The EU granted Georgia candidate country status in December 2023.

02:24Chancellor Scholz's Social Democrat party kicked off the election campaign on Saturday

02:29with a so-called victory conference.

02:32With only 85 days remaining until Germany's snap elections, Scholz positioned the SPD

02:36as the only party for the people and heavily criticized the CDU, who are currently leading

02:41in the polls.

02:42The Chancellor promised to protect jobs and distance Germany from the EU regarding electric

02:47vehicles and urged negotiations with China over tariffs.

02:51Whilst the mood amongst SPD members was jubilant, Defence Minister Pistorius was not at the

02:56conference.

02:57Despite the party's social media team coming under fire for its aggressive campaign, it

03:02seems that the party has now gone on the offensive in a bid to hold on to votes, with the CDU

03:08and AfD parties leading in Germany's latest polls.

03:20A new metro's first construction began about 38 years ago has been inaugurated in Thessaloniki,

03:26Greece's second-largest city.

03:28The 9.6-kilometre inaugural line, using driverless trains across 13 stations, was officially

03:35opened on Saturday by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

03:40The Greek officials say the public will be able to use the metro for four days completely

04:08free of charge.

04:10The Thessaloniki metro was first conceived more than a century ago and the first terminal

04:15was dug in 1986.

04:23The European Commission has approved a package proposed for the German flag carrier Lufthansa

04:28to acquire a minority stake in Italy's ITA Airways.

04:32Lufthansa won EU antitrust approval in July to buy 41% of state-owned ITA.

04:39The deal is worth €325 million and is aimed at boosting the Italian airline's presence

04:44in the lucrative southern European market.

04:47The Italian economy ministry had to commit to allow competitors such as EasyJet to operate

04:52more routes from Italy.
