The IDF said it has killed Hashem Safiyedin, a top Hezbollah official widely expected to
00:08
be its next leader.
00:10
He was reportedly killed in an airstrike on southern Beirut in early October, not long
00:15
after the Israeli military killed former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
00:20
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with several Israeli officials
00:26
on Tuesday during his 11th visit to the region, including Defense Ministers Yoav Galand and
00:31
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
00:34
He is hoping to revive efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the need for Israel
00:40
to do more to help increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
00:45
Gaza's humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly dire, especially in the north.
00:51
On Monday, the World Health Organization evacuated 14 critically ill patients from the Kamal Adwan
00:56
Hospital in northern Gaza to al-Shifa Hospital amid a renewed Israeli military offensive
01:02
and critically low aid supplies.
01:05
The United Nations Humanitarian Office reports that Palestinians in northern Gaza are rapidly
01:10
exhausting all available means for their survival, and that Israel is still denying requests
01:15
to deliver much-needed aid to the area.
01:18
The Israeli military has issued more evacuation orders for northern Gaza as it continues its
01:23
ongoing siege.
01:32
In the first public confirmation by the U.S., the Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on
01:37
Wednesday that there is evidence that North Korean troops are in Russia, and it remains
01:41
to be seen what they would be doing there.
01:44
As we continue to look at this, there is evidence that there are DPRK troops in Russia.
01:54
What exactly they're doing, left to be seen.
01:58
These are things that we need to sort out.
01:59
We'll have more for you on that later.
02:02
Hours earlier, Ukraine's military intelligence chief, Kyrill Budanov, said that the first
02:06
North Korean units were expected to arrive to Russia's Kursk region on Wednesday, the
02:11
23rd of October.
02:13
They could supposedly help Russia resist Ukraine's incursion.
02:17
Early in October, Budanov said the total number of around 11,000 North Korean troops in Russia
02:24
will be ready to fight in Ukraine by the 1st of November.
02:28
He said that in return, Russia is helping North Korea evade sanctions and develop its
02:33
nuclear capabilities, including providing technologies for smaller tactical nuclear
02:39
weapons and submarine missile launch systems.
02:42
South Korea's spy chief stated that about 3,000 North Korean troops have been sent to
02:48
Russia and they're now receiving training on drones and other equipment before being
02:54
deployed to the battlefield in Ukraine.
02:57
There was a report that about 10,000 troops planned between Russia and North Korea are
03:03
expected to arrive by the 12th of December.
03:09
Volodymyr Zelenskiy said earlier that according to the military intelligence, some North Korean
03:14
officers are already in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
03:19
The UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres arrived in Russia's city of Kazan on Wednesday
03:29
for the BRIC summit hosted by President Vladimir Putin.
03:33
His attendance, in light of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, has been controversial,
03:39
with the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry describing it as a wrong choice.
03:43
Another controversial attendee is Turkey's Recep Erdogan, a NATO member historically
03:48
aligned with the West.
03:53
Putin has already met with several members in the BRICS alliance, including India's Narendra
03:57
Modi and China's Xi Jinping.
04:00
The summit is sending jitters across Europe as the ever-growing club hopes to rival the
04:05
Western economic hegemony.
04:07
The bloc is now two and a half times the EU's economic size.
04:12
High on the agenda are discussions on forming an alternative payment system for trade between
04:17
members in local currencies, to bypass the dollar-based network, as well as other ways
04:22
of promoting alternatives to the US-led global order.
04:31
French maritime authorities pulled the bodies of two migrants from the English Channel on
04:36
Wednesday that had attempted to cross the treacherous waterway between France and England.
04:42
Their deaths were confirmed by a medical team in the French port of Calais.
04:46
This pushes the count of dead and missing in French waters so far this year to 53.
04:51
In a statement, authorities said a search operation was launched after a life vest was
04:55
found at sea.
04:57
Forty-six other people on board a heavily overloaded inflatable boat were rescued, they
05:01
added.
05:06
Dozens of funeral crosses lined the road leading to this factory, owned by the car parts giant
05:11
Valeo, in northwestern France.
05:14
A symbol of the 300 employees at risk of losing their jobs.
05:27
Since Monday night, the workers at this plant that produces battery cooling systems for
05:31
electric vehicles are on strike.
05:33
Two other factories nationwide are also on the brink of shutting down.
05:38
It's a constant source of stress and anxiety for the employees.
06:03
With falling car sales, companies like Valeo searching for cheaper labor abroad and the
06:08
EU Commission's goal to switch to all-electric vehicles by 2035 are all causing a crisis
06:15
within the car industry across Europe.
06:18
Many workers at the Valeo plant even wonder whether the car industry has a future in Europe.
06:24
Euronews reached out to Valeo but the company refused to answer any of our questions.
06:41
The fate of the three plants should be decided by mid-December.
06:50
Pensions has become a hot topic in Germany, with several political parties capitalizing
06:54
on poverty amongst retirees.
06:57
We sat down with Berlin pensioner Anchi, who told us she receives 1,500 Euros net per month
07:03
after a 45-year career working as an elderly carer, to ask about the reality of pensions.
07:14
And what about the other pensioners at the care home Anchi worked at?
07:45
We spoke to the German pension system, who highlighted that pensions are tied to wage
08:03
development and said that pensions have increased by 4.5% this year.
08:08
They also recommended relying on other sources of income for retiring.
08:38
Despite that, the pension system is a gift that allows seniors who have contributed to
09:04
society for 45 years to be given the opportunity to retire for another few decades in peace.
09:21
A little corner of the countryside, right in the middle of Europe's biggest port.
09:27
Here in Rotterdam, 30 cows occupy this farm on the water, producing 600 litres of milk a day.
09:34
But behind this local agricultural enterprise lies an ecological project
09:37
designed to meet the challenges of climate change.
09:40
The floating barn, the only one of its kind in the world,
09:44
deploys a range of technologies to limit its carbon footprint.
09:47
A robot regularly passes through the barn for that purpose.
09:52
It soaks up the manure and then it brings the manure to the separator.
09:57
And the manure is immediately separated between the urine and the dry part of the manure.
10:03
And that is really important, because if you do so,
10:07
within three hours you have 60% less emission.
10:12
So that is about sustainable farming.
10:16
The floating farm has been in operation for five years now.
10:20
Water is at the heart of its concept as a response to the risks of flooding in
10:24
rising oceans and seas caused by global warming.
10:29
Rising temperatures are exacerbating the water stress
10:32
that affects 20% of Europe and 30% of the Union's population every year.
10:37
The cowshed in the port of Rotterdam is equipped with two systems to reduce this pressure.
10:45
The first one is we collect rainwater on the rooftop and we purify it downstairs
10:51
and then we reuse it on the farm.
10:53
And the other one is that we pump up brackish port water and we like to desalinate it.
11:00
But desalination without chemicals.
11:02
We only need heat and what we do, we use the heat of the manure.
11:09
In its latest report on water, the European Environment Agency points out
11:14
that agriculture represents the biggest pressure on this resource.
11:19
Pollution from the sector affects 32% of groundwater and 29% of surface water.
11:26
The Agency therefore suggests a change in agricultural practices,
11:30
the use of new technologies and to get the sector to operate with less water.
11:35
Just as they do in Rotterdam.
