00:39by the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

00:47Orban added that he would extend an invitation to Netanyahu to travel to Budapest and that

00:52the court's verdict would not have an effect in Hungary.

01:19Netanyahu condemned the court's decision to issue warrants against him and his former

01:24defense secretary, Yoav Galand, and called the verdict anti-Semitic.

01:40An arrest warrant was also issued to Hamas leader Mohamed Daif.

01:44U.S. President Joe Biden said that there was no equivalent between Israel and Hamas and

01:49condemned the court for comparing the Israeli politicians with Daif.

01:55The U.S. and Israel are not members of the ICC, but the 27 member states of the European

02:01Union are required to detain those with an arrest warrant if they set foot on their soil.

02:08The court has no way of enforcing this, but the EU's top diplomat, Giuseppe Borrell, said

02:13the court's decision should be respected and implemented.

02:20Several member states, such as Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, France and Sweden, signaled

02:26that they would respect the court's decision.

04:05On Thursday, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime

04:09Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, accusing them of using quote

04:15starvation as a method of warfare.

04:19Israel adamantly denies all charges.

04:28Russia's President Vladimir Putin has blamed the aggressive actions of NATO countries for

04:33Moscow testing a new intermediate-range missile in a strike on Ukraine.

04:38Putin said Russia was conducting combat tests of the new Oreshnik missile system after Ukrainian

04:44strikes earlier this week using U.S. and British weaponry.

05:10In his nightly video address Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed Russia's use of

05:15the Oreshnik, saying Putin was using Ukraine as a training ground.

05:40Earlier this week, U.S. President Joe Biden gave Ukraine authorization to use U.S.-supplied

05:45longer-range missiles to strike military targets deeper inside Russia.

05:51According to the Kremlin, Ukraine fired several ATAKMs into Russia on Tuesday.

05:56And a day after that, Ukraine used up to 12 British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles

06:00for strikes into Russia's Kursk region.

06:04U.S. officials have said the change in the Biden administration policy was a response

06:08to Russia using thousands of troops from North Korea to support Moscow's forces in

06:13the conflict.

06:21Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said he won't run for Chancellor in February's

06:25snap elections.

06:27In a video posted to SDP social media channels, Pistorius said he's not available and would

06:33instead support Olaf Scholz's re-election bid.

06:37Pistorius, currently polling as Germany's most popular politician, said his decision

06:41not to run against Scholz was sovereign and entirely personal.

06:46Scholz called a snap election after the collapse of the coalition in early November.

06:50That came after Scholz fired the then-Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

06:55Scholz told the press at the time that Lindner had broken his trust too many times.

07:00As per German election rules, the Bundestag will hold a government confidence vote on

07:04December 16th before voters head to the polls on February 23rd.

07:09The traffic light coalition has governed Germany since 2021 and its collapse meant Scholz's

07:14government no longer had a majority in parliament.

07:17The SDP confirmed on Thursday that they would nominate Scholz as their lead candidate for

07:22Chancellor next week.

07:24But according to current opinion polls, support for the Social Democratic Party is low.

07:29A tally published on Thursday by political research group Infratest-D-Map shows the

07:34CDU-CSU polling at 33%, with the SPD trailing behind at 14%, level with the Greens.

07:43A labor union at German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to go on strike next month

07:51after negotiations with management over proposed drastic cost-cutting measures collapsed.

07:57The parties held their third round of talks on Thursday at the firm's headquarters in

08:02Wolfsburg.

08:03The union proposed creating a fund worth roughly 1.5 billion euros by declining part of wages

08:10for two years.

08:11That this will be in a scope that will make it very, very clear to the company that we

08:16as IG Metall and the employees of Volkswagen take it seriously.

08:20Around 7,000 workers demonstrated at the venue of the meeting to press their demands.

08:26The carmaker has been struggling financially amid a drop in demand in Europe and intensifying

08:32competition with Chinese electric vehicle makers.

08:36Any domestic closures will be the first in Volkswagen's 87-year history.

08:50After some delay due to power games, the three largest political groups in the European Parliament

08:54gave the green light to the new Fonder-Lehen College of Commissioners.

08:58At the end, the Socialists accepted the Italian right-wing Raffaele Fitto to become executive

09:04vice president, while the EPP renounced to demand the downfall of the Spanish Socialist

09:09Teresa Ribera.

09:11Both will get big economic portfolios.

09:14Also, Hungarian Oliver Varhely from the far-right Patriots group survived, but he lost some

09:20powers over women's health controversy.

09:23His portfolio could be limited.

09:25Now, the hard work lies ahead for the new Commission, which faces many challenges.

09:31I would say there are two kinds of challenges for the Commission.

09:34The first kind is the priorities of the Commission, implementation of the Green Deal, going forward

09:41on defence industry, also agriculture.

09:45The Commission promised a new strategy or a new vision for agriculture in the 100 days.

09:50Also the pre-enlargement reviews of all the policies, of all the EU policies.

09:56But the second kind of challenges are the external challenges, like the election of

10:01Donald Trump, the situation in Ukraine, and also what we saw recently, the migration situation

10:07and the political consequences of it.

10:09So the Commission will have to balance what it has in priorities, but also how these priorities

10:16could be modified or disrupted by the global context, the current situation.

10:24These challenges will be addressed by Vice Presidents and Commissioners.

10:27The former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas will be the new High Representative of Foreign

10:31Affairs and Security Policy, and Lithuanian Andrius Kubulis will be the Commissioner for

10:36Defence and Space.

10:40For issues that could come up, especially with the election of Donald Trump, the Slovakian

10:44Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sevcovic, will be the one to take action.

10:50For migration issues, the Austrian Commissioner, Magnus Brunel, will be responsible.

10:57At the same time, the new EU Commission may need to address some of the problems of the

11:01European citizens, which have become political.

11:04There will be two portfolios to watch.

11:08The first one on energy and housing, and the political consequences of the housing crisis,

11:14and that will be the Danish Commissioner Jørgensen, and also the question of skills, meaning education,

11:20training and labour conditions, with the Romanian Executive Vice President of the Commission,

11:25Roxana Minzatu.

11:27The official vote of the plenary is expected next week in Strasbourg, which would allow

11:31the new Commission to start working on the 1st of December.

11:36So far, no other surprises are expected.
