Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would ignore the arrest warrant issued
00:05
by the ICC for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
00:11
Germany's defense minister says he won't run for chancellor in February's snap elections
00:16
and supports Olaf Scholz's re-election bid.
00:21
German automaker Volkswagen Workers' Union threatens new strike action after negotiations
00:27
break down.
00:35
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would ignore the arrest warrant issued
00:39
by the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
00:47
Orban added that he would extend an invitation to Netanyahu to travel to Budapest and that
00:52
the court's verdict would not have an effect in Hungary.
01:19
Netanyahu condemned the court's decision to issue warrants against him and his former
01:24
defense secretary, Yoav Galand, and called the verdict anti-Semitic.
01:40
An arrest warrant was also issued to Hamas leader Mohamed Daif.
01:44
U.S. President Joe Biden said that there was no equivalent between Israel and Hamas and
01:49
condemned the court for comparing the Israeli politicians with Daif.
01:55
The U.S. and Israel are not members of the ICC, but the 27 member states of the European
02:01
Union are required to detain those with an arrest warrant if they set foot on their soil.
02:08
The court has no way of enforcing this, but the EU's top diplomat, Giuseppe Borrell, said
02:13
the court's decision should be respected and implemented.
02:20
Several member states, such as Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, France and Sweden, signaled
02:26
that they would respect the court's decision.
02:34
This is probably the only meal Yasmin will be cooking for her family all day.
02:40
She lives in a tent with her husband and four daughters in a camp in central Gaza.
02:45
They have been displaced five times already.
03:10
These days, a bag of bread costs over $13 and meat has all but vanished from supermarket
03:16
shelves.
03:17
The UN has warned of a stark increase in the number of households experiencing severe hunger
03:23
in central and southern Gaza.
03:27
This appears to be linked to the robbery of nearly 100 aid trucks last weekend, which
03:32
Israel blames on Hamas.
03:40
I am ashamed to say this in front of a million Muslims watching us.
03:48
We are in war, people are suffering, children are not going to school, there is a lot of
03:59
suffering.
04:00
What can I say?
04:01
If someone has 25 people, maybe he can't afford a bag of flour.
04:05
On Thursday, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime
04:09
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, accusing them of using quote
04:15
starvation as a method of warfare.
04:19
Israel adamantly denies all charges.
04:28
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has blamed the aggressive actions of NATO countries for
04:33
Moscow testing a new intermediate-range missile in a strike on Ukraine.
04:38
Putin said Russia was conducting combat tests of the new Oreshnik missile system after Ukrainian
04:44
strikes earlier this week using U.S. and British weaponry.
05:10
In his nightly video address Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed Russia's use of
05:15
the Oreshnik, saying Putin was using Ukraine as a training ground.
05:40
Earlier this week, U.S. President Joe Biden gave Ukraine authorization to use U.S.-supplied
05:45
longer-range missiles to strike military targets deeper inside Russia.
05:51
According to the Kremlin, Ukraine fired several ATAKMs into Russia on Tuesday.
05:56
And a day after that, Ukraine used up to 12 British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles
06:00
for strikes into Russia's Kursk region.
06:04
U.S. officials have said the change in the Biden administration policy was a response
06:08
to Russia using thousands of troops from North Korea to support Moscow's forces in
06:13
the conflict.
06:21
Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said he won't run for Chancellor in February's
06:25
snap elections.
06:27
In a video posted to SDP social media channels, Pistorius said he's not available and would
06:33
instead support Olaf Scholz's re-election bid.
06:37
Pistorius, currently polling as Germany's most popular politician, said his decision
06:41
not to run against Scholz was sovereign and entirely personal.
06:46
Scholz called a snap election after the collapse of the coalition in early November.
06:50
That came after Scholz fired the then-Finance Minister Christian Lindner.
06:55
Scholz told the press at the time that Lindner had broken his trust too many times.
07:00
As per German election rules, the Bundestag will hold a government confidence vote on
07:04
December 16th before voters head to the polls on February 23rd.
07:09
The traffic light coalition has governed Germany since 2021 and its collapse meant Scholz's
07:14
government no longer had a majority in parliament.
07:17
The SDP confirmed on Thursday that they would nominate Scholz as their lead candidate for
07:22
Chancellor next week.
07:24
But according to current opinion polls, support for the Social Democratic Party is low.
07:29
A tally published on Thursday by political research group Infratest-D-Map shows the
07:34
CDU-CSU polling at 33%, with the SPD trailing behind at 14%, level with the Greens.
07:43
A labor union at German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to go on strike next month
07:51
after negotiations with management over proposed drastic cost-cutting measures collapsed.
07:57
The parties held their third round of talks on Thursday at the firm's headquarters in
08:02
Wolfsburg.
08:03
The union proposed creating a fund worth roughly 1.5 billion euros by declining part of wages
08:10
for two years.
08:11
That this will be in a scope that will make it very, very clear to the company that we
08:16
as IG Metall and the employees of Volkswagen take it seriously.
08:20
Around 7,000 workers demonstrated at the venue of the meeting to press their demands.
08:26
The carmaker has been struggling financially amid a drop in demand in Europe and intensifying
08:32
competition with Chinese electric vehicle makers.
08:36
Any domestic closures will be the first in Volkswagen's 87-year history.
08:50
After some delay due to power games, the three largest political groups in the European Parliament
08:54
gave the green light to the new Fonder-Lehen College of Commissioners.
08:58
At the end, the Socialists accepted the Italian right-wing Raffaele Fitto to become executive
09:04
vice president, while the EPP renounced to demand the downfall of the Spanish Socialist
09:09
Teresa Ribera.
09:11
Both will get big economic portfolios.
09:14
Also, Hungarian Oliver Varhely from the far-right Patriots group survived, but he lost some
09:20
powers over women's health controversy.
09:23
His portfolio could be limited.
09:25
Now, the hard work lies ahead for the new Commission, which faces many challenges.
09:31
I would say there are two kinds of challenges for the Commission.
09:34
The first kind is the priorities of the Commission, implementation of the Green Deal, going forward
09:41
on defence industry, also agriculture.
09:45
The Commission promised a new strategy or a new vision for agriculture in the 100 days.
09:50
Also the pre-enlargement reviews of all the policies, of all the EU policies.
09:56
But the second kind of challenges are the external challenges, like the election of
10:01
Donald Trump, the situation in Ukraine, and also what we saw recently, the migration situation
10:07
and the political consequences of it.
10:09
So the Commission will have to balance what it has in priorities, but also how these priorities
10:16
could be modified or disrupted by the global context, the current situation.
10:24
These challenges will be addressed by Vice Presidents and Commissioners.
10:27
The former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas will be the new High Representative of Foreign
10:31
Affairs and Security Policy, and Lithuanian Andrius Kubulis will be the Commissioner for
10:36
Defence and Space.
10:40
For issues that could come up, especially with the election of Donald Trump, the Slovakian
10:44
Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sevcovic, will be the one to take action.
10:50
For migration issues, the Austrian Commissioner, Magnus Brunel, will be responsible.
10:57
At the same time, the new EU Commission may need to address some of the problems of the
11:01
European citizens, which have become political.
11:04
There will be two portfolios to watch.
11:08
The first one on energy and housing, and the political consequences of the housing crisis,
11:14
and that will be the Danish Commissioner JΓΈrgensen, and also the question of skills, meaning education,
11:20
training and labour conditions, with the Romanian Executive Vice President of the Commission,
11:25
Roxana Minzatu.
11:27
The official vote of the plenary is expected next week in Strasbourg, which would allow
11:31
the new Commission to start working on the 1st of December.
11:36
So far, no other surprises are expected.
