Judy Garland's ruby slippers from 'The Wizard of Oz' to be auctioned

An original pair of glittery ruby red slippers worn by Hollywood actress Judy Garland in the 1939 movie 'The Wizard of Oz' is on display in London before they go under the hammer at Heritage Auctions in the US in December. The slippers, one of only four surviving pairs made for the film, were worn by the child actress in several iconic scenes.

01:34…pair in the Academy Museum in LA and then there's one pair that a private collector
01:38has held for a very long time.
01:46So, these slippers are so precious in the sense that
02:16the movie itself is legendary. Everyone thinks about the Wizard of Oz and everyone knows the Wizard of Oz.
02:21I can tell you I've taken these across the world and as far as Tokyo, and they're still recognizable.
02:27It really was the first movie, I think, that
02:31made waves and is known generation to generation to generation.
02:35It really lives on and I think that's what makes these
02:37slippers so special is because with the movie these slippers also live on. They are a
02:42fabulous ruby color that a lot of people don't realize that they're not as red as the movie.
02:48That's based on Technicolor lighting and being one of the first films to do Technicolor,
02:52they had to be a lot darker in person than they would appear on film just because the lighting.
02:58So, they are a dark ruby color.
03:00This is the darkest pair we believe in existence at this point.
03:05They are absolutely untouched as far as refurbish or
03:10glue, all the sequins. After they were stolen, they remained out of custody of anyone, of course, in the thief's hands until
03:192018 when the FBI received a tip and they were
03:24recovered. They did a sting operation. They were recovered, apparently buried in a Tupperware underground. So, these have been on a journey.
03:32I think these are the type of thing that it
03:36crosses over categories. It could be a very big Judy Garland fan. It could be a large Wizard of Oz fan.
03:41It could be a Wicked fan. It could be a collector that's just interested in collecting, you know, memorabilia or
03:48collecting all the things across the board. We've seen a lot of different people interested in this. It then could be an institution
03:54that's interested in purchasing these. It could be someone that is
03:58interested in purchasing them for an institution. So,
04:01anyone can bid and
04:03anyone can buy.
