'Largest Princess Diana auction' features frocks, hats and bags

From colorful frocks and hats to handbags and shoes, items belonging to the late Princess Diana go under the hammer this month in what Julien's Auctions says is the largest collection of her fashion to go to auction.

The live and online "Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection" sale will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, offering an array of fashion items Diana wore.

The auction also includes pieces belonging to other British royals including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the queen mother.

00:00This is the
00:29largest Princess Diana auction because we have over 100 items from her amazing life
00:35and career, those short-lived incredible memories, part of her legacy.
00:40Keep in mind Diane herself, she sold over 70 of her dresses at the behest of her young
00:46son Prince William back in 1997 to raise money for her charity.
00:51She raised over 3 million which at the time was a huge amount of money when she did that
00:55auction in New York and then sadly we lost Diana two months after that.
00:59People do consider these items as an asset class now because if people own these items
01:04today chances are in years to come they will sell them for more than what they pay for
01:10auction.
01:11You see that incredible Belleville Sassoon, beautiful colourful dress made for Diana for her visit
01:18to Australia in 1988 when Australia was celebrating their bicentennial year.
01:23I was there in Sydney, living in Sydney so it was incredible for me to see Diana, the royal
01:29family come for that huge event with the fireworks, the tall ships in the harbour and Diana to
01:34wear that dress that same to Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney and she loved it so much and people
01:40loved it so much that she wore it in fact on at least nine occasions that we know, she wore
01:45it in Africa, she wore it in Spain, she wore numerous events in the UK.
01:49The Lady Dior bag is the one item that every lady or girl wants to talk about or see.
01:56So incredible.
01:57Gifted to Diana in 1995 by Bernadette Chirac, first lady of France at the time and it was
02:03known as the Choo Choo bag and because Diana wore it and carried it and we know that she
02:09had it in Argentina in November of 1995 and then many many times after that she always loved
02:15the Dior bags, she had them in different colours but this bag was then renamed Lady Di or Lady Dior,
02:21very smart on Dior's part and it can still be bought today for probably five to seven thousand
02:26in any of the main stores around the world.
02:29The Catherine Walker evening gown is truly exquisite so made for Diana for a royal visit to Saudi Arabia
02:38and the United Arab Emirates in 1986. You'll notice by the neckline and the long sleeves,
02:44very conservative, of course they were going to Saudi Arabia, a very conservative country.
02:49But Catherine Walker and Diana were brilliant because the falcon is the bird, the national bird
02:54for that region so they have falcons right from the front of the dress in migration mode
03:00all the way down the back of the dress onto the train, just exquisite.
03:17I think it's good if the person is experienced though because it's such a huge job that it helps,
03:23you know, if you've got a track record of designing couture because at the end of the day it's a
03:27handmade dress for one person. It's got to be totally unique.
03:31The dress was exquisite made by Elizabeth and David Emmanuel. We have that sketch in the sale.
03:37I spoke to Elizabeth at her exhibition in London last week and she told me about
03:41the dress she was reduced by, Diana shrunk by five sizes from her first fitting to her final fitting for
03:51the wedding dress. The dress weighed 20 pounds. The train was 25 foot long. So I had to take in the
03:57dress to fit Diana. They had to trim the lace on the train to make it proportionate. So a piece
04:02of that original train lace is attached to the sketch from Elizabeth Emmanuel in this auction. So that's
04:11really historic.
04:24Diana herself, she did not want to be pigeonholed into the Diana era like the Edwardian, Elizabethan,
04:32Georgian eras that we all are familiar with. She wanted classic timeless fashion. The outfits you
04:39see around me here are over 40 years old, some of them, and they could be worn today. So she really
04:46achieved what she wanted. That's a classic, timeless. Diana, 21, 25, 100 years from now, would still be
04:53relevant. We were still talking about her and we need more people like Diana in the world today because
04:59of what she represented and the message she delivered every event she attended.
05:29I'm sure she had the time. She must have the time. She can be able to watch her.
05:33She wanted to face one more. It was her. She was new. She was the way to share it.
05:35She was the most part. She was the only one. She and her wife, she was the only one.
05:36She was the only one. She was the only one. She was the only one. She was in a
05:41picture. This is her. Her. What?
