Health Minister Zulkifli Ahmad said he would review the findings of a survey by five nursing
00:07
associations on the extended working hours for nurses. This followed opposition to a new directive
00:14
under the civil service remuneration system mandating ward nurses to work 45 hours a week
00:19
effective December 1st compared to the current 42 hours. In a statement yesterday, the nursing
00:25
associations requested that the directive be postponed due to a shortage of manpower and
00:31
increased risks of work-related stress, fatigue and burnout. In a post on X, Zulkifli said he
00:37
welcomed the views of the associations and their call to engage with health ministry officials.
00:43
He said all recommendations would be reviewed and asked health ministry staff for patience
00:48
while the policy is refined as quickly as possible. Last Thursday, Zulkifli described
00:53
the additional three hours as reasonable and said the welfare of those affected by
00:57
the increase would be better taken care of as they would be given more flexible shifts.
01:02
However, in their statement yesterday, the association said increasing nurses' weekly
01:06
working hours could undermine the effectiveness of healthcare service delivery and affect the
01:11
quality of patient care. Natasha Bust, FMT News.
