00:06user data and the country's national security. So why are there concerns about TikTok and is

00:11a ban even possible? Ruth can explain in less than 60 seconds. TikTok is owned by the Chinese

00:16parent company ByteDance, which some U.S. officials believe poses a threat to national security.

00:21Specifically, the FCC is concerned that user data from American TikTok accounts could make

00:26its way back to China, where someone could then use it to influence elections or other

00:30political processes in America. Because of this, TikTok and the U.S. government are working on

00:35negotiations to have ByteDance divested to an American company. And according to a New York

00:40Times article, a preliminary agreement was drafted in September. A TikTok spokesperson said the app

00:45is confident it will reach an agreement with the U.S. government that will satisfy all reasonable

00:50national security concerns. The FCC cannot ban the app. It will need help from Congress, which

00:55has taken action over the agency's concerns before.
