A cold but bright start for many, with persistent northerly winds. Wintry showers continuing for much of  the north and northwest. In the south, feeling more pleasant in the sunshine and lighter winds. Under areas of clear skies, temperatures falling quickly overnight, widely below freezing. Into Saturday morning, cloud thickening in the west as Storm Bert approaches, bringing strong winds and rain, with some outbreaks of snow over higher ground. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 22/11/24. 00:00Hi there. For many of us it's a bright Friday but it is cold out there and there is some

00:05ice around. That's a head of storm Bert expected to bring disruption from snow, rain and wind

00:12for the first part of this weekend in particular. But Friday is relatively quiet compared with

00:18recent days and upcoming days. We've got northerly winds still, we've got a lot of ice particularly

00:23where we've had sleet and snow during the last few days and there will be further sleety

00:27or snowy showers coming into the north and north-west but not as many as we've seen recently.

00:33And away from the showers actually plenty of crisp November sunshine with temperatures

00:36of 7 degrees in the south feeling a little more pleasant with lighter winds as well.

00:43But under those clear skies temperatures will fall quickly overnight after dark, widely

00:47below freezing and significantly below freezing for Scotland and parts of northern and eastern

00:52England. Further west cloud thickens, the wind picks up and outbreaks of rain move

00:57in. As that happens we'll see some snow for a time across parts of northern Ireland especially

01:01over higher parts likewise for mid and north Wales. You can see the temperature contrast

01:0511 degrees at this stage in Cornwall just above freezing or below for the east of the

01:12UK and as a result well quite quickly the snow turns to rain for northern Ireland and

01:18Wales but a more significant spell of snow develops across northern England and much

01:23of Scotland. Now we're expecting during Saturday morning that snow to accumulate thick and

01:28fast accompanied by strong winds. There will be blizzards over the hills and drifting of

01:33the snow as well as power line accumulations so the risk of interruptions to power supplies.

01:39In other words treacherous conditions for northern England and Scotland and in terms

01:43of accumulations well in just a space of a few hours, 5 to 10 centimetres at lower

01:48levels especially around the Vale of York and also for the Central Belt and as much

01:52as 20 to 40 centimetres over hills so if you've got travel plans I would urge you to think

01:59again because it really is going to be horrendous for travelling across parts of Scotland and

02:04northern England and there could be significant impacts. But we then see the mild air push

02:11in and during the afternoon the snow turns back to rain and for many northern parts of

02:16the UK very quickly temperatures rise and we've got this rapid thaw setting in. That

02:21combined with the heavy rain across many northern and western parts of the country we'll see

02:26the risk of flooding. Although it's been a dry November so far when we're talking about

02:31rainfall accumulations of 40 millimetres widely and more than 100 millimetres for western

02:36hills that could cause some localised flooding and some impacts on the roads as well by the

02:42end of Saturday. But you can see the wind is also strong with wind gusts of 60 even

02:4870 miles an hour for exposed coasts and hills so all in all a very lively day of weather

02:54and I would recommend that you pay close attention to the latest forecasts and warnings and of

03:01course travel disruption would be worth factoring into any plans for the weekend. It is turning

03:10much milder with temperatures in the mid-teens later Saturday and into Sunday but staying

03:17blustery on Sunday with further rain at times before something a little quieter at the start
