Under the auspices of Tebang Tao is the heart of Pagunlad
00:03
from November 23 to November 29.
00:06
This year, it will be held in our country,
00:08
the Population and Development Week.
00:10
Of course, we will talk about that here in SainiDoc.
00:14
And because it's Wednesday,
00:16
we will be together to discuss that in the Department of Health
00:20
with Doc Marwin Bello.
00:21
Doc Marwin.
00:31
Good morning, RST.
00:33
I am Dr. Marwin Bello from the Department of Health.
00:38
Now, we will know what SainiDoc has to say
00:41
when it comes to various discussions on health.
00:44
From November 23 to November 29,
00:49
we held the Population Development Week here in the Philippines.
00:54
This is in accordance with the Executive Order No. 76
00:58
signed in October 20, 1992
01:01
by the former President, Fidel Ramos.
01:05
This Executive Order emphasized
01:08
the strengthening and broadening of the campaign
01:12
that addresses the problem when it comes to the population growth of the Philippines
01:16
and the capacity of a country
01:19
for a stable, prosperous, and sustainable life for all.
01:24
Because of this,
01:25
to give us additional information about this discussion,
01:29
we will be joined this morning
01:32
by Ms. Mylyn Mirasol Kiray,
01:35
the Acting Division Chief of the Knowledge Management and Communication Division
01:39
of the Commission on Population and Development.
01:43
Welcome to SainiDoc and to Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:49
Happy family, Doc Marwin.
01:51
It's so good to see you.
01:53
Ma'am, how is the situation of the population of the Philippines now in 2024?
01:59
Actually, Doc, according to the 2020 Census of Population and Housing,
02:04
we now have 109 million Filipinos in the country.
02:08
And the number of Filipinos being born below the replacement level
02:13
means that 1.9 million,
02:15
which is less than two children,
02:17
are now being born in the country, Doc Marwin.
02:20
So, if it's 1.9 million,
02:22
the mother and father will not be replaced in the population.
02:25
So, that's the situation of our population now.
02:28
There are also a lot of people who don't want to get married and are single.
02:32
Yes, Doc, that's true.
02:34
We have a study, Doc,
02:36
that the Filipinos really want,
02:39
sometimes, to have pets over children.
02:42
Their priorities are more economic now, Doc Marwin.
02:47
So, the lifestyle is different.
02:49
For those who are married,
02:51
how many children should they have?
02:55
Should they have a spouse or a family?
02:59
We are saying to the Commission,
03:01
to the Population of Population and Housing, Doc Marwin,
03:03
the quality of the population is what we want.
03:06
We will not say the ideal number of children.
03:11
But what we want is for the mother and father to be replaced in the population
03:15
so that they have a replacement in our population.
03:19
But, we are below the replacement now.
03:22
Women are being educated,
03:25
so their children are less.
03:28
Especially when they are educated,
03:30
when they are employed.
03:31
So, that's what's happening, Doc Marwin.
03:33
Yes.
03:34
But it still needs to be given a quality of life
03:39
for the children of a family.
03:43
So, what advice do you have for every Filipino
03:48
who has a family during this time?
03:53
Even if we are below the replacement level,
03:56
we still want to tell our fellow Filipinos
03:59
to plan for a family.
04:01
That's really for a quality of life.
04:05
Because even if we are below the replacement level,
04:12
we still see women who have children
04:16
that they don't intend to have.
04:19
So, there's still a gap.
04:21
If they have three children,
04:23
they only want two.
04:25
So, there are still women like that.
04:27
So, to our viewers,
04:29
we invite you to still plan for a family.
04:32
Because the traditional method of family planning is still high, Doc.
04:35
16.5%.
04:36
So, there are still a lot of Filipinos
04:38
who are withdrawing and using the calendar method,
04:41
which is Bukay Kang Bata Ka.
04:43
So, it's not effective, Doc.
04:45
And the current method that we use is only 42%.
04:49
Yes.
04:50
So, Ma'am, how can they access these family planning commodities or methods
04:55
to have the right number and distance of birth?
05:02
Actually, in our health centers,
05:05
family planning is free.
05:07
It's given by the Department of Health.
05:09
So, to those who are listening and watching,
05:11
you can go to the health centers
05:13
because the family planning methods are free there.
05:16
You can also access,
05:18
let's talk about the family planning,
05:20
the Facebook page,
05:21
our page,
05:22
Commission on Population Development Facebook page,
05:24
for questions that you can't ask about family planning,
05:27
and sex, you can ask there.
05:30
What advice do you have for young people
05:33
who are not yet married
05:35
and can get married in the future
05:38
to have the right number of children?
05:44
So, in adolescent pregnancy,
05:47
the number increases from 136,000 to more than 150,000.
05:56
So, we want our young people to protect themselves.
06:03
We really want our behavior to be protective for them.
06:09
For our parents,
06:12
we ask them to educate their children about sexuality first.
06:21
So, we want you to be the source,
06:24
not your friends, not the media.
06:28
Because it could start as early as teaching them
06:33
about good touch, bad touch in kindergarten.
06:36
Protective talk.
06:38
Not just the touch, but the warning signs.
06:41
If they are in danger,
06:43
our young people should know about it.
06:45
At the same time,
06:46
we also ask our schools
06:49
because there is a Department of Education policy
06:53
where comprehensive sexuality education
06:56
is integrated in the curriculum.
06:58
But we really need to teach this.
07:01
For our Senators,
07:03
we are asking you, the Department of Health,
07:06
to pass the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill
07:09
which is very important and is in the Senate.
07:13
What is your last message to our listeners and viewers?
07:18
So, this Population and Development Week
07:21
of November 23 to 29,
07:23
our Filipinos are still asking you to do family planning
07:27
for the quality of life.
07:29
For those who are using traditional methods of family planning,
07:33
don't do that because those methods are ineffective.
07:37
The withdrawal calendar.
07:39
What we really want is modern methods of family planning.
07:42
Get a vasectomy.
07:43
Adults,
07:44
if you are friends, you should do family planning.
07:47
Ladies, you can get a ligation.
07:50
There are a lot of pills, injectables, implants.
07:54
That is what we are still promoting.
07:56
One more thing, Doc.
07:57
Adolescent pregnancies are increasing.
08:00
So, we also want our young people to protect themselves.
08:06
Protect yourselves because that is the number one thing
08:09
that we need protection for.
08:12
Thank you very much, Ma'am,
08:14
for giving us this information.
08:18
I hope our fellow Filipinos learned something from this.
08:22
Always remember,
08:23
a well-planned family is victorious.
08:25
Let's talk about family planning.
08:29
I am Dr. Marwin Belio,
08:31
your health advisor.
08:34
See you next week, RSTs.
