The six titles vying for Game of the Year crown have been revealed - but which have the highest Metacritic rating

00:00We interrupt this gaming session to bring you breaking news. The nominees for the Gaming

00:08Awards 2024 have finally been confirmed. After much anticipation, we now know the six titles

00:14that will be vying it out to win the prestigious Game of the Year award at the ceremony in

00:20Los Angeles on December the 12th. There will be 29 categories in total, but the real prestigious

00:26one is the Goatee. But with so much time before the ceremony next month, and with public voting

00:33still open until 11th of December, we got to wondering, of the six titles that are up

00:39for the Goatee, which has the best Metacritic score? And could that point in the direction

00:44of who'll win in December? Let's take a look, shall we? In the name of fairness, I'm doing

00:52this in alphabetical order, so we'll start with Astrobot, which is one of the big PlayStation

00:595 exclusives that released this year, came out in the autumn, and it was a massive hit

01:03with critics, and it has a 94 rating on Metacritic, which means universal acclaim, and the user

01:10score is pretty much identical at 93, so that's a really strong effort there. Baltaro, the

01:17highly addictive, poker-like, roguelike card game that's available on pretty much every

01:23system that you can think of, and has had people addicted for months now, is equally

01:28acclaimed at 90, so it's also universally acclaimed. It's got a slightly lower user

01:34score of 83, but yeah, it's similar ballpark at least. Black Myth Wukong, which is the

01:40much-anticipated and highly hyped up Chinese blockbuster AAA game, which is based on The

01:47Journey to the West, the legendary Chinese story from the past, one of their sort of

01:54foundational stories. It got a score of 81, which makes it the lowest of the titles this

02:00year, so it has an 81 from critics and an 83 from users, so it's still pretty similar,

02:05like you're give or take a couple of points. Elden Ring's massive expansion, Shadow of

02:12the Edgery, is also up for goatee. Elden Ring won goatee in 2022, and its massive expansion,

02:21which is sort of almost two years later it came out, is equally as acclaimed. It has

02:25a 94 rating with critics, which is also a sign of universal acclaim on the website on

02:32Metacritic, but the user score was a bit lower on this one at 81, which is a little

02:36bit of a surprise considering how popular Elden Ring has been since its arrival. Final

02:43Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part of the massive trilogy, Final Fantasy remake trilogy

02:50that Square Enix are doing over the course of about a decade, came out this year. The

02:56first part came out in 2020, this second part came out in 2022, and this has received

03:02acclaim from critics. It has a 92 rating on Metacritic, again meaning universal acclaim,

03:08and it had a 90 from users, so both users and critics were really high on this one.

03:13And finally there's Metafort Re-Fantasio, I really don't know how to pronounce that

03:19one, sorry guys, and that's yet another massive RPG, this time from Atlus, who are the people

03:25who make the Persona games. It's sort of their first big console title outside of

03:30Shin Megami Tensei V, which came out on Switch recently, but it's their first big console

03:39game since Persona 5, which was obviously really acclaimed and is the same level of

03:45acclaim for this title. It got a 94 on Metacritic, so that's three titles with 94 in the race

03:51for GOTY, which is pretty incredible what a year for gaming it's been, huh? So, who
