COP29: President of COP cautiously optimistic about reaching goals despite calls for reform

A letter signed by global leaders and renowned climate scientists calls for reform of the COP process.

00:00Today, COP 29 hosted a high-level panel on climate and peace, although the debate around

00:06the need for a reform of the COP process has very much taken center stage here in Baku.

00:11In an open letter published on Friday, more than 20 experts, including former leaders

00:16and scientists, said that despite its achievements, the COP process needs an overhaul.

00:21And as COP week one draws to a close, we asked COP 29 president-designate what's at stake

00:26so far.

00:27I think it is really a good start for COP 29, not only 6.4, but also agenda adopted

00:35on the first day.

00:36And we start to work 6.4, give us additional motivation to fulfill all other obligations

00:46or discussions items.

00:48But we are focused for NCQG, you know, it's a main topic for COP 29.

00:54And all the countries, we provide all necessity conditions to the parties to discuss it, to

01:01talk.

01:02We have a lot of ministerials, a lot of meetings here.

01:04And it is really very hot temperature of discussions now.

01:08Meanwhile, progress on the agreement for the new climate finance goal is underway.

01:13We have already positive signal from the MDBs, International Financial Institutes, they upgrade

01:20their contributions for the next years.

01:25And I think it's a good signal.

01:27And we continue to talk with the parties, with the donors.

01:32And a lot of discussions between the parties are continuing.

01:35We understand how it's important to give this positive message to the parties that really

01:43all the forces are consolidated to have this conclusion in Baku.

01:47But it is really complicated.

01:50And we still try to talk to the parties to navigate this process.

01:56And we provide all conditions for the parties to discuss, to debate and to negotiate this

02:04very important issues.

02:06All eyes are set on the coming days.

02:08Next week, in fact, will be crucial to determine how much this COP will achieve and the level

02:13of commitment from all parties in meeting the Paris Agreement's goals.
